‘A Confession’ star Martin Freeman says not enough police on our streets

Martin Freeman has spoken up for a former top detective he plays in tense new ITV drama A Confession.

The Sherlock actor stars as Detective Superintendent Stephen Fulcher, whose career came to a premature end after he arrested the killer of Sian O’Callaghan in Swindon, Wilts, in 2011 and got him to admit to a second murder.

Fulcher failed to follow strict rules as he persuaded Christopher Halliwell – now 55 and serving life – to confess to killing Becky Godden, 20, years earlier and lead the detective to her body.

The officer quit in 2014 after being disciplined for gross misconduct.

Martin, 47, said: “It’s one of those things where you go, ‘I can’t believe that. He’s been properly done there’. And not only has he been done, but it’s someone who you really do want working for us.

“There aren’t enough police on the ground. You’re going to get rid of good ones as well? It’s a very dodgy road to go down, I think, for us as a society.”
