Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion absolutely dominated the music charts in 2020 with their hit song, “WAP.” The ultra-explicit single was absolutely everywhere as soon as it first debuted in August 2020. The lyrics are all about women’s sexuality and how they want men to please them.
The single also came with a super sexy video from the women. The song’s lyrics became the most searched in Google in 2020 and it broke the record for the biggest 24-hour debut for an all-female collaboration on YouTube. Though “WAP” dominated the charts it also drew ire from conservatives. However, the song and all of the hoopla surrounding it almost did happen.

Unfortunately in the entertainment industry, women are still pitted against one another. There was a ton of drama surrounding Cardi B and Nicki Minaj and a rumored feud between many other female rappers in the industry.
As Megan burst onto the scene in the years following Cardi’s mega-success, rumors swirled that the women were not fans of each other. However, that could not have been further from the truth. In April 2020, fans believed that Megan was dissing Cardi because of alleged comments on her YouTube page.
However, the Houston-born rapper quickly cleared up the drama, pointing to her record label, 1501 Certified Entertainment, with whom she has a hostile relationship for starting fake drama.
“I did not like no d*mn stupid ass comment like this,” Megan tweeted. “I don’t even upload my own sh*t to my YouTube my label does. I DO NOT HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ANYBODY. I don’t like drama I do not bring other females down stop trying to start fake beef.”
Since Megan Thee Stallion cleared up the drama, she and Cardi were able to proceed with “WAP,” which many people, especially women, find deeply empowering.

The explicit lyrics and the song’s acronym, which stands for “wet a** pu**y,” absolutely dominated social media when it debuted. Just like the risque lyrics from female rappers in the ’90s like Trina, Lil Kim, and Adina Howard, the song is about sex, women enjoying sex, sensuality, and sexuality.
Not only does it return the agency of women’s sexuality to them, but it also empowers them to enjoy the act of pleasure while enabling them to be active participants through their own lens and not through the male gaze.

Despite the mega-success of “WAP,” it almost didn’t happy. Cardi B revealed she was super bashful when it came to meeting Megan. “Megan came out, and for like a whole year, I never interacted with her because I was like, I don’t know. I’m too shy and everything,” she explained in HeartRadio Presents SeeHer Hear Her: Celebrating Women in Music via Yahoo. “I feel like other artists are shy too. Should I be cool with her? I don’t know if she likes me.”
Thankfully, Cardi got over her shyness and she and Megan were able to hang out. “It’s always about breaking the ice and always having a conversation and catching somebody at the right time,” she explained. “We linked up and she’s just such a good vibe.”
