“Obviously, hearing this, it’s very shocking,” says Eve, who knows the rapper personally.
It didn’t take long for T.I. to become the hot topic of the day on Wednesday, after he did an interview where he said he accompanies his 18-year-old daughter Deyjah to the gynecologist’s office to ensure she’s still a virgin.
As the interview started to gain traction online, the rapper’s name shot to the top of Twitter trends for all the wrong reasons, as celebrities and pretty much everyone else reacted in disgust.
He was also the top subject of the day on "The Talk," which began airing shortly after his comments went viral.
Speaking to Nazanin Mandi and Nadia Moham on their podcast Ladies Like Us, TI was asked if he has had the "sex talk" with his daughter yet.
"Have I? This is the thing: Deyjah’s 18, just graduated high school now and she’s attending her first year of college, figuring it out for herself," he said. "And yes, not only have we had the conversation, we have yearly trips to the gynecologist to check her hymen."
He said he even goes into the appointment with her to hear the results for himself, insisting his daughter sign a release to allow it. "I will say as of her 18th birthday, her hymen is still intact," he proudly declared.
"Firstly, he should never ever be talking about his daughter’s sex life, ever," exclaimed Sharon Osbourne on "The Talk" Wednesday. "On a podcast? I think it’s freaky he would go to the gynecologist with his daughter and to talk about it. Don’t talk about your kids’ sex life, about what’s going on in their body, it is sacred to them. It’s not your life."
She added, "Because you’re the daddy doesn’t give you other rights, its not your life, let your daughter lead her own life. And keep her privacy."
Eve then chimed in, saying that she’s known T.I. "for years" and, while she considers him "a great guy," she found the comments troubling.
"Obviously, hearing this, it’s very shocking," she said. "If I was his daughter, I would be like, why are you talking about this? Beyond that, this is like daddy issues to the 100th power. Those appointments — while I think it is okay for a dad to have those conversations with your daughter about sexual situations — her time with her doctor, that’s her private time. You’re infringing on her freedom, her body. He doesn’t own her and that’s where I come in with that situation."
She added, "Thankfully, I know him personally and he is a good guy."
Sheryl Underwood, meanwhile, thought he was exaggerating and possibly making these comments for "publicity." Noting that his comments were "too far," she added that it’s at least "good that he cares about his daughter."
The chatter continued on Twitter, where celebrities joined in the wave of regular users railing against T.I. for what he said.
"The Handmaid’s Tale" star Madeline Brewer was among the many speaking out against T.I, tweeting, "This makes me feel physically ill. It’s abhorrent. This isn’t behavior to laugh at or joke about. The level of toxicity and malice and control he’s exerting on his own daughters life and bodily autonomy and and privacy. I’m sick."
Chrissy Teigen tweeted, "def did not think we would be talking about hymens today. or TI." Padma Lakshmi also tweeted, "The double standard of the patriarchy is truly insane. Young women are fully capable of making their own informed decisions about their bodies and their sexuality."
Ellen Barkin added, "I have bad news for T.I. — After 6 months of vaginal sex…my hymen broke."
