Dan Walker slams claim David Beckham visited Queen’s coffin for ‘exposure’

Dan Walker has come to David Beckham’s defence after someone claimed the footballing star went to visit the Queen Lying-in-State for “exposure”.

David, 47, hit headlines today after he was spotted in the queue with thousands of other people who were also wanting to see the Queen’s coffin.

The former Manchester United star started queuing at 2am, and eventually got round to seeing the late monarch 14 hours later.

As he finally made his way into Westminster Hall – where the Queen will remain until her funeral on Monday, 19 September – the dad-of-four was overcome with emotion.

David then bowed his head in respect at the late monarch's coffin, before walking out of the hall and making way for other mourners.

In light of his not-so-low profile visit to Westminster, one Twitter-user accused the ex footballer of only going there for “exposure” in response to Dan Walker’s praise.

The former BBC Breakfast and Strictly Come Dancing star tweeted: “Fair play to David Beckham for joining the #queueforthequeue. 12 hours plus apparently to pay his respects.”

One of Dan’s followers was much less impressed, however, and responded: “Had to show his face didn’t he, any chance of exposure.”

Dan wasn’t having it though, and hit back saying: “Have a word with yourself Chris. He’s been there since 2am this morning. If he wants headlines he pops to the chippy in his PJs.”

Others were much more positive about David’s trip to see the Queen, with some noting how he didn’t skip the queue like other celebs such as Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield.

One person wrote: “At least he didn’t fast track like @hollywills & Philip #QueenElizabethII #queueforthequeue”.

“Quite right as why should celebs be treated any different to the public. Well done Becks,” noted another.

David shared his reasons for visiting Her Majesty’s coffin after an emotional visit to Westminster Hall.

"A special moment I'll always remember is receiving my OBE," Beckham told ITV.

"I took my grandparents with me, who were the ones who brought me up to be a huge Royalist and a fan of the royal family.

"To step up, I have my wife there as well, to get my honour and to speak to Her Majesty. To ask a question. I was so lucky to have a few moments like that in my life.

"To be around Her Majesty. We can all see the love that is being shown how special she was and the legacy that she leaves behind.

"It's a sad day but it's a day for us to remember the incredible legacy that she's left."
