Dianne Buswell, 30, was rushed to the doctor by her concerned mum after she suffered from depleting physical energy. The Strictly Come Dancing 2019 professional’s period of ill health took place when she embarked on a global tour for the first time at the age of 21 Speaking to Happiful Magazine about her ordeal, the dancer admitted she was “exercising excessively and cutting out so many meals” to gain a smaller frame. Opening up about how the dieting and strenuous exercise affected her, she recalled: “I literally went from this bright, bubbly person to a really low-energy Dianne, who’d wake up at one in the afternoon because I was so tired.
“Energy has to come from somewhere, and I was getting none of it. It got to the point where I had no physical energy to do the show or other things.”
Dianne told the publication her mum was “beside herself” with worry and rushed her to the doctor as soon as she returned from America at the end of the tour.
The Strictly favourite was diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia after a series of routine blood tests.
She was then told she required immediate hospital treatment and received an iron transfusion.
Reflecting on the treatment, Dianne added: “I’ll never forget the moment I had the iron transfusion. The feeling was like no other.
“They pumped iron into me and after I went home, for the fun of it because I felt so good, I went for a run.
“I didn’t feel puffed, I didn’t feel ill, I just felt alive again. That was the best feeling.”
Elsewhere, Dianne’s boyfriend Joe Sugg, 28, revealed a secret about the ballroom and Latin dancer’s backstage move after reaching the Strictly final with her last year.
The social media star made the admission while speaking on Strictly Come Dancing: The Official Podcast alongside producer Kim Winston.
“Were there any moves that you could do, or maybe some that you couldn’t do and she thought that she had to change it on the spot?” Kim asked.
“Every single week,” Joe laughed.
“She’d come in with the routine on Monday and be like, ‘This is the routine’, and I’d be like, ‘Right okay’,” he continued.
“I’d try it and because you’ve got that time pressure of having to learn a whole routine in four days.
“Sometimes the pros have to make the call of whether to just stick at it and hope it gets in by Friday, or cut it out and replace it with something a bit easier or stronger on the night. So, yeah, it happened all the time!”
Joe continued: “I’m really excited to be continuing my Strictly experience this year by hosting the podcast.
“The best laughs happen backstage, so I can’t wait to share these special moments with the fans at home.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6.40pm on BBC One.
