Gogglebox fans fuming at Mary and call for show axe over Boris Johnson comments

Some Gogglebox fans have called for Mary Killen to be dropped from the show after comments she made about Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Friday night’s show.

Mary, along with partner Giles Wood, had tuned into the PM’s sit down interview with Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain, which saw the presenter grilling Boris over the current cost of living crisis.

Susanna shared the plight of Elise, a 77 year old pensioner who had been forced to cut her meals to just one a day and ride the bus to stay warm as she could no longer afford to heat her home amid rising fuel costs.

The presenter then when on to reveal the struggling Brit's energy bills had shot up from £17 to £85 a month, with Susanna quizzing the PM on whether he thought this was acceptable.

Yet it was Giles and Mary’s discussion of the topic that left fans fuming, as Mary remarked: “I am very sorry for Elsie but Susanna is making out it is Boris' fault and like he doesn't care.”

Giles then asked her: “Whose fault is it?,” with Mary replying “Well it is the global situation.”

This dismissal of the PM’s role in the crisis did not go down with fans, with many immediately calling for the star to be dropped from the show for being “out of touch” with the reality of so many people across the country.

“Get rid of Mary,” demanded one fan. Another said: “Mary cries her eyes out at nothing every week until it comes to real stuff. Then all she can do is defend Johnson. Horrid woman.”

A third also chimed in with “Can someone remind Mary that Boris Johnson runs this country and it absolutely IS his problem and his fault that an elderly women is riding a bus to keep warm bcos her heating bill has risen more than 4x!”

With another adding: “Don’t know why I’m surprised Mary and Giles are Tories but now I know for sure, I can’t find them funny in the same way anymore, bye.”

Yet not everyone was angered by the comments, with some fans quick to praise the BAFTA winning Channel 4 show for highlighting a different opinion.

“I agree with Twitter that Mary is out of touch and I certainly don’t agree with her,” commented one fan, before adding: “But the beauty of Gogglebox is diversity and able to express opinion, even if it is different from your own. She and Giles can’t be axed because you disagree with them.”

Another tweeted: “I don't understand why people are getting so worked up about Giles and Mary. It's light entertainment, it's not meant to be a documentary. I find them quite amusing. And by the way, they also have feelings and can read.”

While a third commenter said “The fact that people are getting so annoyed at the fact Giles and Mary have an opinion about something is mind-boggling.

“Are we not allowed one now? Are we 'tory scum' if people don't have the same one? Just agree or disagree, don't get so offended, jesus!!!”
