A gunman disguised as a delivery driver shot and killed the 20-year-old son of federal judge Esther Salas, and also wounded her husband at the family’s home in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19th, the Washington Post reports.
Salas, who was reportedly in the basement at the time of the shooting, was uninjured. Law enforcement officials said they were told the gunman appeared at the New Brunswick home wearing a FedEx uniform. Salas’ husband, Mark Anderl, a defense attorney, and son Daniel were shot after one of them opened the door for the gunman around 5 p.m. ET. Anderl was taken to the hospital for surgery and is reportedly in stable condition, according to NJ Advance Media.
While a suspect has yet to be identified or taken into custody, the shooting is currently being investigated by local authorities, the U.S. Marshals Service and the FBI. In a Tweet Sunday night, the FBI said it is “looking for one subject” and asked “anyone who thinks they may have relevant information” to call its tip-line. Authorities have also not released any official reports regarding a potential motive for the shooting.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said in a statement, “Judge Salas and her family are in our thoughts at this time as they cope with this senseless act.”
Salas became the first Hispanic woman to serve as a U.S. district judge in New Jersey after Barack Obama nominated her in 2010 and she was confirmed by the Senate in 2011. She has overseen several notable cases, including one that landed two stars of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, Joe and Teresa Giudice, in jail for various crimes including tax evasion.
Just last week, the Associated Press notes, Salas was assigned a class-action lawsuit brought by Deutsche Bank investors, who have accused the firm of making false statements about its anti-money laundering policies and did not properly monitor “high-risk” customers, such as the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
