Is The Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond Trying to Be Like Joanna Gaines?

Ree Drummond and Joanna Gaines are two of the biggest names in the cooking and home spaces. They’re often compared to each other — to be fair, they do a lot of the same things (specifics on those below) — but Drummond, aka The Pioneer Woman, says she’s not trying to be like Gaines. Ahead, learn how the two are similar and what Drummond says sets them apart.

TV shows made them both famous

Drummond’s blog, The Pioneer Woman, which is still active today, landed the celebrity chef her own cooking show on the Food Network in 2011. Episodes are filmed in the 51-year-old’s kitchen on the Drummond family’s Oklahoma ranch.

Gaines, along with her husband Chip, became household names thanks to the success of Fixer Upper, their HGTV home renovation series based where the couple lives in Waco, Texas. Premiering in 2013, the show ended after five seasons in 2018.

Drummond and Gaines both have books, blogs, and magazines

Both women have published not only cookbooks but children’s books too. The similarities in their brands so start and stop there either.

They both have successful blogs and quarterly magazines —  Drummond has The Pioneer Woman while Gaines has The Magnolia Journal — full of home, cooking, and general lifestyle content sometimes featuring their kids and husbands.

And cookware lines too

Not only do the two have quarterly magazines but they have cookware lines too. Gaines, who has an interior design background, has an exclusive line of home items, including cookware at Target, while Drummond has a line with Walmart.

They both opened restaurants and hotels

Drummond and her husband, Ladd, opened a boutique hotel aptly named The Pioneer Woman Boarding House near where they live in Pawhuska, Okla., which naturally, the celebrity chef chronicled on her blog. She also opened Mercantile better known as “The Merc,” a restaurant, bakery, and store.

Gaines and her husband Chip have a hotel expected to open in 2021, according to Country Living. And they’ve already got a restaurant (Magnolia Table) and bakery (Silos Baking Co.) located at Magnolia Market at the Silos. Between their restaurants, shops, and hotels, Drummond and Gaines have made their small towns big destinations for fans.

Their aesthetics are similar

While Drummond’s wares are more colorful like her signature tops worn on The Pioneer Woman, Gaines sticks to a more neutral color palette for her products. But despite the obvious difference in color both stick to the rustic farmhouse vibe reflective of their lifestyles.

Drummond and Gaines’s brands are all about family

Both women have big families — Drummond has four kids while Gaines has five — and often feature their loved ones in their work. Whether it be a recipe, an Instagram post, or a magazine cover, their families never far away.

Drummond admits she and Joanna Gaines have ‘many similarities’

During a conversation The Pioneer Woman had with USA Today in May 2019, the celebrity chef admitted to having a lot in common with Gaines and her husband.

“I do see many similarities,” Drummond said before adding she and Gaines have talked on occasion. “Joanna and I have exchanged an email or two cheering each other on. But what they have achieved is amazing, and the sky’s the limit for them,” she added.

But although they’re similar, Drummond says she’s not Gaines.

Ree Drummond says this one thing differentiates her from Joanna GainesWhile The Pioneer Woman continues to grow her brand from Oakla., she says she won’t be trying for a TV network like the Gaineses. “That’s where our paths will diverge; I think my husband and I are too tired for that,” she said.
