James Martin: ITV chef warns Saturday Morning guest after cheeky on-air comment

James Martin, 47, found himself issuing a strict warning to one of his Saturday morning show guests today. Mixologist Merlin Griffiths, featured on the show but was told off after he went to make a cheeky comment about London’s Big Ben creator.

While rummaging up some of his speciality New Year’s Eve cocktails, Merlin found himself promptly cut off by James as he was telling the story of how Big Ben was constructed.

The chef took a breather from sipping on a cocktail, in order to prevent him from breaching daytime TV rules and regulations.

The host looked red in the face as he interrupted his guest, saving him from making a huge blunder.

Merlin was in the middle of giving viewers a little inspiration for New Year’s Eve drinks when the awkward situation happened, as he created his tall glass drink, The Big Ben.

As he was preparing the cocktail, he said: “I like this because it comes with a bit of a story as well,” as he fiddled around with his ingredients.

James looked puzzled but eager to find out more about the Benedictine tonic.

“As you might know it’s not the clock, it’s not the tower, it’s the bell inside the tower at the houses of parliament,” Merlin explained.

“It was named after Lord Benjamin Hall, who was the clerk who had it put up.

“He was known as Big Ben because he was a tall, lofty man – hence the bell gets its name Big Ben from him!” the mixologist continued.

James spluttered as he giggled: “I thought you were going down different avenue then!”

The other guests laughed as they seemingly thought the same thing.

Merlin looked embarrassed as he joked: “Well I was going to say it would be very -,” but was cut off sharply by James.

“No, no!” he exclaimed.

“We’ll stick with that story.

“Quite happy with that for daytime ITV,” he quipped, looking worriedly at the camera.

Despite the slip-up, the chef was very impressed with all five cocktails Merlin debuted on the show.

The various flavours can all be found on James’ website, with a rundown of the yummy ingredients, all of which are a simple alternative to the classic gin and tonic.

“It’s going to change my life that,” he said, of the Portonico cocktail made up of white port and tonic.

“It’s going to give me a massive headache in the morning,” he laughed, as he signed off the show wishing viewers a happy New Year.
