Tributes have poured in from across the entertainment industry as they paid tribute to Christine McVie, after news broke that the Fleetwood Mac singer-songwriter had died aged 79 on Wednesday. Jeremy Clarkson has shared his sympathies and admitted the news has upset the former Top Gear presenter.
Taking to Twitter today, the Clarkson’s Farm star, 61, was inundated with messages of support as he reacted to the news.
Christine’s bandmates led the tributes as they celebrated the musician’s life.
“There are no words to describe our sadness at the passing of Christine McVie,” they said in a group statement.
“She was truly one of a kind, special and talented beyond measure. She was the best musician anyone could have in their band and the best friend anyone could have in their life. We were so lucky to have a life with her.
“Individually and together, we cherished Christine deeply and are thankful for the amazing memories we have. She will be so very missed.”
Jeremy echoed a similar sentiment, as he told his 7.9 million followers: “I’m genuinely and properly sad that Christine McVie has died.”
Fans flocked to comment on the post, as Mr W-ton tweeted: “It feels extra sad because we all know that her generation of ‘Real’ musicians will never be replicated/replaced. RIP Christine Mcvie and thoughts with all those close to her.”
Ian penned: “What hit me harder was that she was 79 – I still visualise her as she was recording Rumours.”
Daniel commented: “Very sad, but don’t stop thinking about tomorrow Jezza.”
Phil tweeted: “Grew up with Fleetwood Mac and the music they made. Every track on Rumours brings back a memory of lost loves and a happier less complicated time in my life. RIP Songbird.”
Rhi added: “I remember you talking about the Mac with so much affection. I cried when I heard but especially reading Stevie’s letter to her. Mum and Dad loved Chicken Shack and later the Mac. I’m named after Rhiannon and I learned to play piano because of McVie – those two were my world.”
Christine’s bandmate Stevie Nicks posted a handwritten note paying tribute to her best pal.
“A few hours ago I was told that my best friend in the whole world since the first day of 1975 had passed away,” she wrote.
“I didn’t even know she was ill … until late Saturday night. I wanted to be in London; I wanted to get to London – but we were told to wait … See you on the other side, my love. Don’t forget me.”
Mick Fleetwood wrote that McVie had “left us, earthbound folks, to listen with bated breath to the sounds of that ‘songbird’ … reminding one and all that love is all around us to reach for and touch in this precious life that is gifted to us.”
He added: “Part of my heart has flown away today.”
