Mike Mendel dead: Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland ‘destroyed’ as he confirms news

Rick and Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, 39, broke the news of Mike Mendel’s death on Twitter this evening. Writing in view of his 746,000 followers, the voice actor, writer, producer and director said: “My friend, partner, and line producer Mike Mendel passed away. I am devastated. My heart breaks for his family.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do without you by my side Mike,” he tweeted. “I’m destroyed.”

Fans of Rick and Morty, The Simpsons and other shows which Mike helped make flooded to the comments to share their condolences and tributes.

“I’m so sorry, Justin. For all of you,” one said. “Mike was a gem. This is awful.”

“Much love to you and the R&M family. This is devastating,” another wrote, while a third penned: “Rest in peace Mike Mendel. I will have his family in my prayers.”

Justin did not share any further information about Mike’s death.

The cause of death has not yet been reported.

Express.co.uk has contacted Cartoon Network asking for comment.

Mike is credited with producing 22 episodes of animated series Rick and Morty between 2013 and 2017, according to IMDB.

He has also worked on nearly 200 episodes of The Simpsons.

In addition, his career as a producer included work on the likes of Good Vibes and Sit Down Shut Up.

Animation Production Designer Carol Wyatt, who worked alongside Mike on Rick and Morty, used Twitter to pay tribute to her friend.

“Mike Mendel was the best person, producer, friend, soul a person could have in this crazy business!” she said, sharing Justin’s tweet.

“I will miss him so much.”

The Simpsons writer Al Jean, who also worked on The Critic with Mike, shared group picture including the late producer, saying: “V v sorry too learn if the passing of Mike Mendel (left) great guy, Our thoughts are with his family.”

TV writer Michael Jonathan tweeted: “Mike Mendel was a producer on the first show I ever worked on.

“He would tell these amazing stories from working on some of my favourite shows, and I am lucky our paths crossed even a little bit. RIP.”
