The actor, who was acclaimed for his role in 1997’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, is normally incredibly forthright in his opinions, and confessions on the life he has lived. Tonight, he will appear on ITV’s Piers Morgan’s Life Stories, as he likely discusses his experiences within the acting industry, as well as his sexuality. One aspect of his life he has been candid on is politics, and in the past he has been outspoken when dismantling those representing the nation in Parliament.

The pro-EU star, who also enjoyed commercial success in the St Trinian’s franchise, admitted to always backing Labour in general elections, but confessed that he was unhappy with the makeup of politicians in 2017.

He argued that the country “needs someone young and energetic”, but claimed “instead we have old farts, on the Left and Right”.

He added: “They’re like old slappers that have been on the block too long.

“I don’t like Jeremy Corbyn at all, or John McDonnell, and I loathe Diane Abbott.”

At the time, Mr Corbyn had enjoyed a surge in support at the 2017 general election, where his Labour Party – supported by the likes of Mr McDonnell and Ms Abbott – managed to win an additional 30 seats, with the Conservatives losing 13.

This led to a Conservative-led minority Government, and meant their leader Theresa May had to make a confidence-and-supply agreement with Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Everett said he didn’t vote in that election because he “didn’t think anyone was coming up with anything that would keep the country moving”.

He told the Evening Standard: “I’ve always voted Labour, except for once when I voted Conservative because Ed Miliband was trying to take Labour in the direction it’s going now. I regretted it.”

The 61-year-old also took aim against “injections of populism which are like crystal meth, from the Right and the Left — they’re distorting everything”.

Everett supported a second referendum on Brexit, called the People’s Vote, and in a heartfelt confession on an edition of BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs last year, discussed the difficulties of sharing a home with someone with different views on the EU.

He told host Lauren Laverne that he lives with his mother in “her house or she lives in my house, whichever one of us you are listening to”, adding: “She is 85 and set in her ways – a Brexiteer – and I am 60 and set in my ways, and a Remainer.

“And there is obviously a certain amount of friction but also it is great.”

Everett’s interview with Morgan, a host on Good Morning Britain, may come as a surprise to some viewers, particularly after the pair fell out during a Comic Relief edition of The Apprentice back in 2007.

The actor left filming after just one day, and would go on to hit out at the former newspaper editor during an interview with The Guardian.

He said Morgan was a “killer” and “slobby and elephantine”, while describing his wife Celia Walden as “gorgeous and funny”, adding: “I mean, she deserves to be ****** by a God.”

And in a final dig, Everett said he had “always imagined [Morgan] to be hung like a budgie underneath it all”.

However, Morgan noted in a Daily Mail column last year that while filming tonight’s special interview the pair had buried the hatchet.

After Morgan confronted Everett with what he had called him, the actor “paused for several awkward seconds”, before bursting out laughing and saying: “I’m sorry!”

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs tonight from 9pm on ITV.
