Skai Jackson has been bringing the heat during her time on Dancing With the Stars, but as confident as she looks when she hits that stage every Monday to compete for the Mirrorball trophy, she is juuuust like you and me—according to Skai, she frequently struggles with anxiety, and feels nervous before performing live for millions of viewers on television.
Skai spoke with People and explained that she started having symptoms of anxiety in her earlier teenage years. “I would get stage fright when I would do certain speaking engagements and I always would get through them but it was a really nerve-racking and hard thing to do,” she said. “The last few years I’ve dealt with it and not knowing how to get through it. It’s been really hard for me.”
Though being live while competing on DWTS is hella nerve-wracking, Skai takes it all in stride, admitting that it “challenges” her anxiety, but helps her cope with it. “I’m trying to break myself out of it in a sense and [I’m] fighting through it.”
Whenever she’s going through an anxious spell, Skai confides in the people who are the closest to her. “My friends are my everything,” she said. “When I feel that anxiety I always call them or text them and they talk me through it…My friends know I deal with a lot of things especially anxiety and they’re always here for me which is amazing.”
And if Skai’s besties aren’t available, she always has her fans to cheer her up! “I feel like talking to them and reading comments or anything to interact with them is the best thing ever and it makes me so happy.”
Keep up the great work, Skai. We’re all rooting for you, BB!
