Will Smith's Latest Movie Is His Colonoscopy

Will Smith’s YouTube channel is a delightful mishmash of videos that feature behind-the-scenes moments from his movies, funny collabs with other YouTubers, and a look into his family life.

Most recently, Smith decided to vlog his first colonoscopy. Smith just turned 51, so he’s at the right age for a colonoscopy, or, as he joked to the camera at the beginning of the video, “I’m 50, so people need to look up my stuff.” The American Cancer Society generally recommends that people get their first colonoscopy at 50, although they recently changed that number to 45 after a rise in colon and rectal cancers in young people.

As we’ve come to expect from the actor, Smith’s video is full of informative information tied in with plenty of jokes. He explains the lead-up to the procedure, and details his experience with the rather strong laxative he had to take the night before.

Smith then goes in for the colonoscopy, and and after he comes out of anesthesia, he jokingly asks for vodka instead of ice water, and shares that he hasn’t “done many drugs in my life, so, this stuff works on me really well.” A couple days later, Smith gets his results, and its revealed that he had a precancerous polyp in his cecum, the largest part of the colon, removed.

“Ninety-five percent of colon cancers arise from that type of polyp,” his doctor, Dr. Ala Stanford, explains, before she recommends he gets another colonoscopy in two to three years.

As Smith explained, the purpose of the video was to encourage others to take care of their health. “2019, gotta get our health right. There’s a certain amount of commitment and embarrassment involved with being healthy. You just gotta do it, man,” he explained. He also included a link to the National Cancer Institute’s website so viewers could get more information on cancer screening tests.
