Willow Smith opened up about her experience being polyamorous, including how much sex she has compared to her other friends and whether or not she believes that marriage is right for her. Smith shared the details of her lifestyle during the Red Table Talk discussion, shedding some light on how many people she would want to date at once.
Willow Smith shared her experience with polyamory
Smith was candid during the latest episode of Red Table Talk, titled “Is Polyamory For You,” giving more context and understanding to why she is in a polyamorous relationship.
Her mother, Jada Pinkett Smith, asked Smith how she made a decision to live this lifestyle. “With polyamory, I feel like the main foundation is the freedom to be able to create a relationship style that works for you and not just stepping into monogamy because that’s what everyone around you says is the right thing to do,” Smith explained.
“So I was like, how can I structure the way that I approach relationships with that in mind?,” she continued. “Also, doing research into polyamory, the main reasons why monogamous relationships — or why marriage — why divorces happen is infidelity.”
When Smith asked her mother, “How did you feel when I told you that I was polyamorous?,” Pinkett Smith shared her reaction.
“When you were like, ‘Hey this is my get down,’ I was like, ‘I totally get it,’” Pinkett Smith recalled. “Wanting to set up your life in a way that you can have what it is that you want, I think anything goes — as long as the intentions are clear.”
Willow Smith revealed she has less sex than her non-polyamorous friends
While discussing the topic, Smith noted that she became interested in polyamory because of the sexual and nonsexual aspects involved.
“I’ll give you an example. Let’s say you haven’t always been the kind of person that wanted to have sex all the time,” she said. “But your partner is. Are you gonna be the person to say, you know, ‘Just because I don’t have these needs, you can’t have them either?’”
“And so that’s kind of one of the reasons why I actually was interested in poly because I was introduced to it through kind of a nonsexual lens,” Smith continued.
“In my friend group, I’m the only polyamorous person, and I have the least sex out of all of my friends,” she added.
Does Willow Smith believe in marriage?
The conversation included everyone’s thoughts on commitment and marriage and Smith explained the circumstances that would make her want to get married.
“The history of marriage really irks me,” she shared. “Just the history of marriage as a whole and what it has represented over the years, for women in particular.”
“I feel like the only way that I would get married is … let’s say me and my partner or partners wants to help people and we need to put our finances together in order to make that vision happen,” Smith explained. That’s the only way I could see myself getting married.”
As for how many partners Smith would have a relationship with, she explained, “I honestly couldn’t see myself going past two, outside of myself.”
