The first teaser trailer for Colin Farrell’s The Penguin has landed and Batman fans are comparing its ‘darkness’ to The Sopranos.

The 46-year-old actor is reprising the role as the iconic DC Comics villain, having first played him opposite Robert Pattinson’s Caped Crusader in last year’s blockbuster.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but it’s thought the story will pick up where the movie left off, with Gotham facing more chaos following the death of mob boss Carmine Falcone.

Instead, fans have had to make do with sightings of The Banshees of Inisherin actor looking unrecognisable in costume while filming in New York to learn more about the highly-anticipated show.

But now they’ve been given a substantial taste of what’s to come, with the first teaser trailer dropped by HBO, with one Twitter user responding: ‘You have my attention.’

Starting with a shot over the iconic Gotham skyline, Colin is heard saying ominously in a voiceover: ‘This is one of those moments you’ve got to ask yourself, what kind of life do I want?’

‘The world ain’t built for guys like us,’ the In Bruges star continued, as The Penguin’s face is seen for the first time ducking into a building as it pelts it down with rain outside.

As he jumps into a car, the villain states that’s why ‘we’ve got to take whatever we decide is ours.’

A series of shots then shows The Penguin in difficulty, including having a team of muscle grab him by the shoulders and threaten him with a knife.

He then brandishes a crowbar near a subway stop at another character, warning him he will ‘cut him open like a fish’ if he ‘steps out of line even just one time.’

The trailer ends with The Penguin shooting a person, who is not visible, dead before bursting out into laughter and announcing himself as ‘the new Kingpin of Gotham.’

On Twitter, fans rushed to comment on the snippet with many comparing the show to The Sopranos.

‘It’s giving me Sopranos vibes in a Batman world and I’m loving it,’ one remarked.

Others heaped praise on the trailer and Colin’s performance, with a fan saying: ‘This is what I’m talking about this is DC, the dark DC.’

The cast also features Shawshank Redemption’s Clancy Brown as crime boss Salvatore Maroni, with the likes of Cristin Milioti, Michael Kelly, Shoreh Aghdashloo and more also set to appear.

Confirming the exciting spin-off, Colin said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter: ‘The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot.

‘I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become the Penguin. Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.’

The Penguin is coming to HBO Max soon.
