Exclusive: Caitríona Balfe on 'Outlander' Season 6 & Who She’d Cast as Older Jamie & Claire

For Caitríona Balfe, the last 6 months have been busy, to say the least. Balfe became a mother for the first time, is the lead in the Oscar-nominated film Belfast, and got nominated for both BAFTA and SAG Awards for the film. Oh — and she stars in Outlander, which returns for season 6 on March 6. We caught up with Balfe and got to ask her all of our burning questions about all things Outlander, from shooting while pregnant to her favorite things about working with co-star Sam Heughan, to whom she’d cast as older Jamie and Claire, and what kind of father Jamie Fraser would have been with a newborn. Watch the full exclusive video above to find out what she had to say.

Season 6 brings even more drama for Claire Fraser — which is a lot considering what she went through in the season finale of season 5. We’re still not able to re-watch that episode. The stress continues in season 6, and Balfe said shooting in the dead of winter in Scotland, pregnant, and running around pregnant wasn’t the easiest! Plus, she had to do emotionally stressful scenes, and sometimes joked (looking down at her stomach), “It’s okay, this is just pretend!” Future Balfe baby didn’t know his mom wasn’t a regular mom, she’s a cool mom who runs around a Ridge with a large shotgun in one hand and a dose of penicillin in the other. Thankfully, Balfe had very supportive co-stars and the Outlander crew. She says she owes them lots of “cupcakes and wine.” See? Cool mom.

Balfe and Heughan were producers again this season, this time from the very start, so they got to collaborate early on and see scripts. Balfe gave us a look into what that process is like in making sure they produce the best show possible. She also revealed what she loves about working with Heughan, her co-star of almost eight years, that he might not know. Balfe also tells us which Jamie and Claire episode is her favorite this season and why. And then she lets us in on two characters she’d like to return to the show. She also answers a few fan questions, including what her theory behind Jamie’s ghost appearing in the first episode of Outlander is. Personally, we all know Jamie Fraser wouldn’t let anything separate him from his wife, including death. Boom. Ghost Jamie. Mystery solved. You’re welcome.

I think we can all agree, only two people should play Jamie and Claire Fraser. And they are Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe. But if Outlander were like The Crown, and cast older actors as the characters age, I asked Balfe who she’d cast as their older counterparts. (The Crown’s Phillip and Outlander’s Frank bear an uncanny resemblance BTW). You’ll have to watch the full video above to hear what she had to say. Outlander returns March 6 on Starz, and check out the best all-time Outlander episodes, because it’s not too late to catch up quickly on seasons one to five!
