'GMA' Anchor George Stephanopoulos Has COVID-19

Two weeks after his wife, Ali Wentworth shared her diagnosis, Good Morning America anchor George Stephanopoulos has revealed he has now tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). The journalist shared his diagnosis on Monday’s edition of GMA, noting that — unlike Wentworth — he hasn’t suffered the more harrowing symptoms associated with the illness.

In fact, Stephanopoulos hasn’t really experienced any of the classic symptoms. “I’ve never had a fever, never had chills, never had a headache, never had a cough, never had shortness of breath,” the 59-year-old news anchor said on Monday morning’s GMA. “I’m feeling great.” Accordingly, as he told co-anchors Michael Strahan and Robin Roberts, he was “fully expecting [the test] to be negative” in the absence of the hallmark symptoms.

However, in hindsight, he says there were a few signs he probably brushed off or misinterpreted. “There was one night, several weeks ago, when I went to bed early with some lower back pain and I thought it was from a hard workout that day, and it cleared up the next morning,” he said, adding, “Then several days after that I had one day when I had a diminished sense of smell, but that was it for my symptoms over the last several weeks.”

His experience is in stark contrast to his wife’s, who admitted on April first that she’s “never been sicker” than she has since contracting the coronavirus. “High fever. Horrific body aches. Heavy chest. I’m quarantined from my family,” she lamented in an Instagram post. “This is pure misery.”

In that respect, Stephanopoulos says his diagnosis was “no surprise.” Earlier this month, he updated fans on how his family had been coping with Wentworth’s illness. “When I woke up this morning around 3, 3:30, she was doing okay. Last night, her fever was actually down a little bit… which is good. And like so many people, she is checking her oxygen every few hours or so,” he said at the time, adding, “It goes for her in cycles. Nights can be pretty rough.”

Stephanopoulos and the couple’s kids — daughters Elliott Anastasia, 17, and Harper Andrea, 14 — have been monitoring and tending to Wentworth, a departure in their household. As he told Strahan and Roberts, “Usually she takes care of us 24 hours a day and now we’re doing our best to take care of her.”
