Wrexham is officially the new Hollywood as the stars of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia descended on the town this week.
Charlie Day, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton and Rob McElhenney jetted off to the small town, which not too long ago might seem like the most random place in the world to bump into the cult classic stars.
But as everyone by now knows, Rob is the co-owner of Wrexham FC, and along with Ryan Reynolds, is heavily involved in the team and regularly watches them play.
Co-stars Glenn, Charlie and Kaitlin, who Rob has been married to since 2008, were among the roaring Wrexham crowd as they watched the team beat Yeovil FC with an incredible 3-0 score.
It was almost a full house for the Sunny cast, although the legendary Danny DeVito was missing – and Deadpool star and co-owner Ryan also missed the big game.
But the four out of five Sunny cast members, as well as executive producer Megan Ganz, were visibly enthralled, snapped wearing the Wrexham colours and scarves and potentially even joining in the chants.
Welsh club Wrexham was purchased for £2 million by Ryan and Rob in 2020, and since then has enjoyed the sort of major attention usually reserved for Premiere League clubs.
As well as the Sunny crowd, Hollywood stars including Blake Lively and Will Ferrell have headed to the UK to catch a match, and there’s even a Disney Plus documentary surrounding the team’s journey.
Season two of the doc is set to be massively dramatic, as the win over Yeovil puts Wrexham one step closer to being promoted from the National League, where they have been since 2008.
The match was an important one, as it gave Wrexham another three points on the board, but the loss meant Yeovil was guaranteed to be relegated.
Proving yet again that he is nothing like his Sunny character, Rob later took to Twitter where he gave his best wishes to the Yeovil team and supporters, and admitted he found football ‘heartbreaking.’
He wrote: ‘One thing that was lost in the excitement last night was that @YTFC was relegated. I spoke with their managers, a few players and supporters.
‘ They were devastated. This sport can be so heartbreaking.
‘They fought hard to the end. I wish them luck and hope they’re back up soon.’
