Last month, Kate Mara and husband Jamie Bell announced they were the proud parents of a baby girl. But it was far more than the usual emotional roller coaster for the couple. Kate Mara revealed she had a miscarriage before her daughter with Jamie Bell in a recent interview on Dr. Berlin’s Informed Pregnancy podcast.
She detailed everything about the pregnancy, starting with how she first told Bell — at a stop light of all places. “He just burst out laughing and was like, ‘Oh my God. How is that possible?’” But eight weeks into the pregnancy, Mara feared something was wrong. The initial sonogram revealed the presence of something, but the baby wasn’t visible. Mara says she tried to remain hopeful, but “I knew there was no way that was possible.” After a few more appointments, it was discovered that Mara had a “blighted ovum” — essentially where a fertilized egg never fully develops into an embryo. As Mara explains it, “Basically, you’ve miscarried, but it just hasn’t left your body yet.”
Thus kicked off a nearly three month series of events before Mara ultimately had a miscarriage. When Mara found out she was pregnant again, it was bittersweet. Mara says she and Bell were excited but also incredibly nervous. “It was a very different dynamic,” she said..Thankfully the baby was healthy, and the couple announced in February their good news. The arrival of the little girl last month is still shrouded in mystery, with little more than an Instagram photo of her tiny toes as proof of her existence. The couple also hasn’t revealed her name.
The fact that these two came out the other side of a traumatic event like this is amazing. Mara and Bell deserve all the happiness in the world, especially with their new bundle of joy. But it’s worth applauding Mara’s bravery in discussing this with such candor and honesty. A lot of women can definitely relate and take her words to heart.
