If you’re feeling a little extra sentimental at the moment, you’re in good company. On Sunday, Kelly Ripa shared family photos of her favorite Easter memories from years past — suggesting that she, too, is grappling with nostalgia on this family-centric holiday. And that’s understandable, right? Given the present circumstances, most of us join Ripa in looking back wistfully on days when social distancing wasn’t an Easter requirement.
It’s already proven to be an emotional week for Ripa. On Wednesday’s episode of Live with Kelly and Ryan, she broke down in tears while discussing her family’s isolation status. Her children apparently won’t hug her out of fear of getting her sick, and it’s breaking her heart a little (also totally understandable). On Thursday, she shared a throwback photo of her mother, Esther, admitting she misses her since they aren’t quarantined together. And on Friday, Ripa posted a wildly cute throwback photo of 22-year-old Michael and 18-year-old Lola way back in 2003 with the Easter bunny.
So, Ripa kept the week’s theme going on Sunday with a series of photos from Easters past. “Happy Easter with love from the Consuelos family to yours,” she captioned a gallery of pictures. “Here’s some of my favorite Easter memories. (Or at least what is stored on this phone).”
In some of the photos, Ripa and Mark Consuelos’ kids — Michael, Lola and Joaquin, 17 — pose with the Easter bunny. In others, they’re in Washington D.C. with the White House and the Washington Monument in the background. There are candid snapshots taken on Easter morning as the kids hold their Easter baskets (and giant chocolate eggs). There are photos in New York City, where the family lives, and photos with friends.
All in all, it’s a bittersweet reminder of better days. Obviously, this year might feel a little less joyful and carefree than Easters past, especially for those who are separated from their loved ones. It’s only natural to mourn what this year might have been if the coronavirus pandemic hadn’t entered the picture.
But it’s also nice to see photos like this from the perspective of promise. Better days will come again. And hopefully this year’s bitterness of missing some of what we love so much about Easter — the hugging, the egg hunting, lunching with loved ones — will make next year seem even sweeter.
