New Girl's Lamorne Morris dishes all on True American and 'nightmare' Ferguson

New Girl star Lamorne Morris has been dishing all on his time spent working on the Fox comedy series, from True American being the result of cast improvisation and Ferguson the cat proving a little problematic at first.

The actor, 36, who plays Winston Bishop on the show, confessed that he and the rest of the cast, including Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson and Max Greenfield, still have no idea when it comes to the rules of True American.

Fans are first introduced to the drinking game in season one and the cast go on to play throughout all seven series of New Girl and while those watching instantly want to play it, it turns out in those scenes, the stars had no clue what was going on.

Speaking exclusively to Metro.co.uk, Lamorne revealed that he and the cast would ‘improv’ all the time on set and the first time the gang are seen playing True American is probably the cast’s most memorable improvisation of all.

‘We probably improvised more than than we read the script. The writers were really big on improv… the reason why our set was so fun was because you had funny people on camera and then even funnier people off camera throwing you jokes,’ he explained.

Referring to the show’s infamous drinking game, Lamorne revealed: ‘True American – people have come up with rule books, handbooks, I believe there’s stores that sell a True American board game… we improvised that scene. We made it up completely.’

‘In the script it said, “they play a drinking game called True American,” there was no real dialogue in there, it was just Zooey shouting stuff out and the director, the first episode we did that, they just let us do whatever we wanted.’

But, now the game has since become something that people try and play themselves, Lamorne added that he and his co-stars are constantly quizzed on the rules.

‘I have people sending me photos of them playing and questions of them debating [the rules] with friends, but I have no idea. I have no clue what these answers are,’ he laughed.

‘I love the messages they are so funny because [the fans] gets into like real debates about it and that’s something that we as a cast just improvised.’

And that’s probably because they did such a good job of making the game seem like so much fun, you can’t help but instantly want to play it.

Watch it and tell us you don’t have the urge to grab a beer and pretend the floor is lava, while randomly shouting out American history at your pals.

But, it isn’t just True American that Lamorne looks back on fondly, as another memorable experience from his time on set was working with Ferguson – Winston’s cat.

Winston and Ferguson arguably rivalled the other big relationships, like Jess and Nick and Schmidt and Cece, on the series, but Lamorne admitted that he and Ferguson didn’t get off to the best start off camera.

‘Winston and Ferguson isn’t just the greatest couple on the show, they are the greatest couple on television. I challenge you to find a better one,’ Lamorne told us, before confessing: ‘Honestly… it was a nightmare working with that cat.’

Probably because he was actually allergic to Ferguson at first.

Lamorne said: ‘[Ferguson] was a total nightmare, he’d scratch me, I was allergic and then I think he just got used to me and I did him.’

‘I became the care-giver of Ferguson,’ Lamorne joked.

‘I was making sure Ferguson was getting enough rest. The show was] always on top of it, but I would find myself in the middle of takes – I’d do a take twice and Ferguson wouldn’t be paying attention and I’d be like, “maybe he’s tired you guys, can he sleep a little bit?”

‘It went from me completely despising working with this cat to looking forward to it.’

So, what changed? Lamorne said: ‘Just because I knew fans loved it and we got a lot of good footage out of it and he became more chill, he would just lay on my chest and just sit there like all day… it turned out to be a really cool thing.’

So much so, that the star joked: ‘We’re working on the movie right now, Winston and Ferguson.’

Not gonna lie, that’s something we’d definitely pay to see…
