Original The Last Of Us actors reunite for Universal Studios attraction

In lieu of a new game, The Last Of Us fans can look forward to a Halloween attraction featuring the original voice actors from the games.

In case you hadn’t heard, Universal Studios is putting together a haunted house attraction themed around The Last Of Us for Halloween, which will run throughout September and October.

That’s hardly surprising considering the franchise became even more popular earlier this year, thanks to the HBO TV series. Although the haunted house is drawing more from the original game than the TV show.

To further compound this, Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, the voice actors for Joel and Ellie from the games, have reprised their roles for the first time since 2020’s The Last Of Us Part 2.

When the attraction was announced, Universal and Neil Druckmann, creator of The Last Of Us, did stress at the time that it would be based on the games (maybe because the show is a Warner Bros. production?) and that you get to team up with Joel and Ellie.

However, Baker and Johnson’s inclusion means there’ll be entirely new voice-acting as opposed to resampling voice lines from the games.

‘We did voiceover recordings with them and they re-recorded our entire dialogue for our haunted house,’ explains Universal Orlando’s senior manager Lora Sauls.

‘So we were very, very excited to work with both Troy and Ashley on the re-recording of our haunted house dialogue,’ she tells SFX Magazine (as transcribed by GamesRadar).

Unsurprisingly, Druckmann has been heavily involved too, to ensure the attraction is faithful to the source material – even deliberately requesting it take place during the first game’s Pittsburgh section.

Aside from the Pittsburgh quarantine zone, attendees will also make their way through dark tunnels and the Hotel Grand, while avoiding clickers and hostile humans.

It sounds like it could be a hoot for diehard fans of the games, although you of course need to fly out to the US to check it out first-hand. The attraction is scheduled to open at Universal Studios Orlando from September 1 and then Universal Studios Hollywood from September 7.

It’s currently the only piece of new The Last Of Us content that fans can look forward to. The multiplayer spin-off, which was initially meant to be a separate mode in The Last Of Us Part 2, remains MIA despite Naughty Dog teasing some proper updates for 2023.

In May, the studio effectively announced a delay, amid reports of Sony pulling staff off the project after receiving less than stellar feedback from Bungie.

There’s also no sign of a third The Last Of Us as Naughty Dog has already begun working on something else entirely, and the second season of the TV show is a long way away from coming out, not helped by the ongoing writers/actors strike.
