Maligned former Good Morning Britain host, Piers Morgan is celebrating a win after dramatically departing the show this week over his longstanding rift with Meghan Markle.
The 55-year-old shared on Twitter that his 11th book, Wake Up: Why the World has Gone Nuts has topped Amazon UK’s book charts, crediting the success as a win for “free speech”.
“BOOM! Wake Up is now Britain’s No1 best-selling book. Amazing. Free speech matters. Very touched to see you many people support me. THANK you,” he tweeted on Sunday morning.
Released October 2020, Morgan details his views on cancel culture and what he believes is ‘woke culture’s’ attack on free speech. The book is structured in the format of diary entries from January to July and covers Britain’s reaction to the pandemic.
“Stockpilers and lockdown-cheats revealed our grotesque levels of self-interest and the virtue-signalling woke brigade continued their furious assault on free speech, shutting down debate on important issues like gender, racism and feminism,” he writes.
Morgan’s win comes after he left a live taping of Good Morning Britain over a clash with his co-presenter Alex Beresford. The fellow TV host confronted him over his longstanding rift with the Duchess of Sussex, leading Morgan to end his six-year run with the show.
“And I understand that you’ve got a personal relationship with Meghan Markle, or had one and she cut you off. She’s entitled to cut you off if she wants to,” said Beresford to Morgan.
“Has she said anything about you since she cut you off? I don’t think she has, yet you continue to trash her.”
This is despite Morgan alleging that him and the Duchess were once friends. In a 2018 interview on the Late Late Show with host, Ryan Tubridy, Morgan said Markle was a “slight social climber”.
“I thought we were having a good sort of friendship building,” he said.
“We got on brilliantly, and then I put her in a cab … and it turned out to be a cab that took her to a party where she met Prince Harry. And then the next night they had a solo dinner together, and that was the last I ever heard from Meghan Markle.
“She ghosted me, Ryan!”
Morgan’s dramatic exit from the show, however, has cost the network dearly. Ratings of the show plummeted from 1.29 million viewers to 1.21 million the day after his walk out. The Mail also reports that ITV’s share price dropped by 3.8 per cent, with the company’s valuation dropping by £200 million ($AU358 million) since his departure.
Despite this the network has confirmed the media personality will not be returning to the show.
“Following discussions with ITV, Piers Morgan has decided now is the time to leave Good Morning Britain,” read a statement from ITV.
“ITV has accepted this decision and has nothing further to add.”
