Street Fighter 6 almost doubles Mortal Kombat player numbers on Steam

Ahead of any sales figures, Street Fighter 6 is proving incredibly popular on PC, managing to outperform Mortal Kombat 11 in just a day.

Today is a very happy day for both Capcom and Street Fighter fans. Street Fighter 6 is now officially in peoples’ homes and with all the positive buzz from players and critics, it’s clearly enjoying a far better launch period than its predecessor, Street Fighter 5.

It’s too soon to tell how well it’s selling but, judging by how popular it is on Steam, this could be a significant turning point for the Street Fighter franchise.

Sales wise, it’s never been as popular as the likes of Mortal Kombat and Tekken, but Street Fighter 6 has already managed to topple their latest entries by setting a new record for the all-time peak of concurrent players on Steam.

In terms of premium fighting games (so not counting free-to-play fare), Mortal Kombat 11 boasted the most amount of people playing at once – 35,147 – which it set when it launched in 2019.

Street Fighter 6’s concurrent player record is nearly double that – 65,873 players. That’s also almost four times more than what Tekken 7 managed when it launched in 2017 – 18,966 concurrent players.

You can see the figures for yourself at SteamDB, but it ultimately goes to show that Capcom is doing something right with the game’s content and marketing, and is appealing to a much larger crowd.

It’s worth noting that while Mortal Kombat is the more profitable fighting game series (in fact, it’s the biggest fighting game franchise of all time), it doesn’t quite the same global appeal.

It’s extremely popular in America, well ahead of any rival, but even in the UK it doesn’t anywhere near as well and is essentially irrelevant in Japan.

This is not helped by the fact that the series rarely appears at major fighting game tournaments, and is often scorned by hardcore of fighting game fans.

It’ll be interesting to see if Street Fighter 6 keeps up this momentum. After all, Mortal Kombat 1 (a series reboot) is launching in just a few months’ time in September.

NetherRealm has so far only shared a cinematic teaser to confirm a handful of characters, but gameplay is expected to be shown at Summer Game Fest next week, followed by an online stress test anyone can sign up for and an August beta for those who pre-order the game.

Street Fighter 6 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
