The 'Real' Reason Mindy Kaling Won't Post Her Daughter's Face

We don’t have much information about Mindy Kaling’s daughter, Katherine (aka Kit) — and she’s made the (totally understandable) decision to keep photos of her 2-year-old’s face off social media. But her “real” reason for that choice? Well, in typical Kaling fashion, it’s pretty funny.

It all came out when newly minted (and record-breaking!) late-night host Lilly Singh sat down with Kaling on her brand-new talk show, A Little Late With Lilly Singh. “Look how adorable Kit’s face is,” Singh deadpanned, pulling up photos of Mindy and her daughter, which all excluded Kit’s face. “Can we just take a moment? I mean, those dimples … those eyes. Are they hazel? … I mean, you look identical.”

But Kaling got the last laugh. “She’s in the Witness Protection Program,” Kaling joked. “She witnessed a crime and she can’t show her face.”

In all seriousness, Kaling’s reasons for keeping her child’s face off social media are entirely valid. “I’m on social media and like sharing with people what my interests are and how my day’s going and all of that, but I do feel entitled to have privacy about my daughter and my relationships,” Kaling told Glamour earlier this year. “It’s really essential to my life that there be something not everybody knows about. That’s a boundary, but it’s a very small boundary. Everything else I really don’t have any issue sharing.”

On Singh’s show, Kaling also touched on other very real aspects of motherhood, such as the fact that she’s no longer as daring as she used to be. She even turned down a free trip to swim with sharks in the Caribbean recently. “I was like, ‘Wait, no I can’t do that.’ I have a kid and if I get killed by a shark, I can’t be like, ‘Oh, your mom just thought it would be fun,’” she said.

Another super relatable takeaway from her interview? Kaling shared that her daughter’s favorite phrase of the moment is, “Mommy busy,” which should resonate pretty well with — oh, just about every parent out there. “It’s a little bit of a sad drama,” Kaling said of Kit’s favorite saying. “But whatever. She’ll be fine.” She does have Kaling for a mom, after all.
