The second season of HBO‘s Big Little Lies is just over a week away and the IRL Monterey Five — Reese Witherspoon, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman — have officially welcomed Meryl Streep into the fold. The six actresses and friends reunited last night at the premiere of Big Little Lies in New York, where the episode introduced the three-time Oscar winner’s new character.
In season two, Streep plays Mary Louise, the mother of Perry Wright (Alexander Skarsgård). Perry, for fans who have the ending seared in their mind, died at the conclusion of season one. This season will see Mary Louise enter the picturesque, beach side town of Monterey, California as she helps her daughter-in-law, Celeste (played by Kidman), raise her twin boys as they cope with the death of their father. But, of course, that’s not all Mary Louise is doing in Monterey.
Much of the sophomore season will be devoted to Streep’s character digging for answers and more. She simply is not convinced Perry just lost his balance and fell to his death on accident. Instead, fans and audiences who are just tuning into this runaway HBO hit, will see the grieving mother-in-law investigating what really happened. Anyone who has been a fan of the show since day one knows there’s one character who simply will not stand for this kind of twisted snooping.
While offering nothing but praise for her costar, fellow Oscar-winner Reese Witherspoon did say the dynamic between her character, Madeline Mackenzie, and Streep’s Mary Louise will be anything but pleasant.
Speaking with Vanity Fair at the show’s blue carpet premiere, the actress dropped some major hints that things were about to hit the fan. “People will quickly discover our characters don’t like each other, and there’s quite an amount of scenes where we take each other on and say some mean and nasty words to each other,” Witherspoon said. “It just gets worse and worse. She has a lot of conflict with pretty much everybody on the whole show, and she’s fabulous. For me, it was such a thrill to do those scenes with her.”
With two powerhouses like Witherspoon and Streep, there’s bound to be fabulous, dramatic exchanges full of biting quips and plenty of passive aggressive insults and insinuations. If there’s anything to know about Madeline Mackenzie, it’s that she doesn’t handle conflict so well, as evidenced in season one. With her wits totally matched by Mary Louise fans can only expect drama, drama, and so much more drama. After all, who could forget when the photo of Witherspoon’s character preparing to lob an ice cream cone at Streep’s back made its way to the internet? Get ready to go back to Monterey when Big Little Lies season two premieres on June 9th.
