I'm a hair expert and here's my biggest advice for women with grey locks – & a mistake that looks really bad | The Sun

A BEAUTY guru has shared how mature women with greying hair can shave years off their appearance and a mistake that will ruin everything.

Finding the first grey hairs is an inevitable part of growing older and whilst some have chosen to embrace ageing, others will opt to stock up on box dye.

However, as one pro, Glam Girl Gabi, recently insisted, it is possible to look youthful with grey or silver strands – that is, as long as you know a few tips and tricks.

Taking to YouTube, where she has a whopping 260k followers, Gabi gave fellow beauty enthusiasts her ''biggest piece of advice'' for those wanting to proudly rock and wear their greys.

She said: "The biggest piece of advice that I have for you if you're looking into transitioning out of colouring your hair is to start by ashing out your hair.

"Mistake number one is having a warm hair colour contrasting with your grey hair.

"Warm-toned browns like chestnut and even warm-toned blondes like honey are a massive contrast to grey because they are tonally opposite,'' she noted in her video.

Given grey is a naturally cool colour, having it right next to warmer shades, she said, will look ''really bad''.

Without first making the transition to ashy tones, the regrowth line, in turn, will be ''all the eye can focus on''.

If you're looking to avoid the harsh contrast, Gabi advised starting with a mushroom brown-like colour, as well as opting for ash-grey highlights paired with deep brown ashy lowlights.

When shopping for haircare, the guru also urged to invest in a purple shampoo to banish all the yellow and brassy tones in seconds.

According to the pro, even sunshine can cause your hair to become slightly yellow, so wearing a hat when it's bright outside is essential.

Taking good care of your locks, whatever colour they are, is another must – and here Gabi strongly urged to hydrate your hair.

Because grey hair has lost a lot of pigment and the hair follicle doesn't produce as much oil, it can often appear course and dry, even wiry in some cases.

Luckily, the market is full of products that can help ''substantially'' to offset this, amongst of which are treatment masks.

When using masks, which many tend to skip on, Gabi also told her fans to use it under heat.

This little hack will open the cuticle layer up, meaning the hair will get a better chance at absorbing the product and its benefits properly.

Speaking of heat, it's essential you don't go overboard, as grey hair strands tend to be more ''fragile'', Gabi reminded.

If you insist on styling your hair, the whizz urged to ''use the proper prep products'', as well as finishing off with a leave-in conditioner and serum.

Fellow beauty lovers raced to comments, where many thanked Gabi on sharing the tips.

One person said: ''I started going Grey at 30 and I've never plucked nor dyed my hair.

''I'm 57 and love my Grey hair! Get tons of compliments on it every where I go [sic].''

Someone else chimed in: ''I love this! I'm turning 40 in a few days and I'm turning gray at 39.

''This video has inspired me to embrace my grays.''
