I'm a wedding planner, the most outrageous requests I've had – including a surprise wedding NOBODY knew about | The Sun

AS the phone rings for her next appointment, wedding planner Georgina Davies is expecting her bride and groom-to-be to reel off the same requests she hears day in, day out – but nothing can prepare her for the direction the conversation takes.

For, in the decade she’s been working in the industry, Georgina, 30, has never heard anyone utter the words: “we want a surprise wedding.” And that’s just ONE of the crazy demands she’s had in the last twenty four months.

The wedding coordinator and planner, who launched her own business called Georgina Rose Events in January 2020 after working for other companies, exclusively tells us: “The couple got in touch and the funny thing was that they weren’t even engaged.

“They had booked the groom’s 30th birthday retreat in a block of accommodation that had a dining room and swimming pool.

“It got postponed because of lockdown, but the date was locked in and there were thirty odd people coming so they wanted to do it as a wedding – but not tell anyone until the day before.

Georgina, who lives in Gloucestershire, continues: “I was into the idea straight away, but there were some big things we had to work around.”

Georgina recalls that there were some glaring things they had to sort early on – including how to get the guests to dress appropriately and the all important matter of breaking the happy news.

She explains: “We told them that the Saturday night was a races themed dinner, so they all had nice clothes and fascinators.

“Then, when everyone arrived on the Friday, they stood in front of them all and said, ‘We’ve got something to tell you. We’ve actually got engaged… and our wedding is tomorrow.’”

“The only people they had told were their parents because they got legally married the week before and they wanted them there. But for everyone else it was so unexpected – the reaction was amazing.

HAIR ME OUT

I shaved off my baby daughter’s unibrow – I was sick of people’s rude comments

Luckily, with meticulous planning, the big day went off without a hitch – despite some hairy moments when the cat was almost let out of the bag.

Georgina explains: “The bride’s dad accidentally said something the day before like, ‘Is this the groom?’ but luckily nobody heard.

“The other main issue was the suppliers. The day before myself and the photographer there to get photos of the reaction.

“We had to put on white shirts to make it look like we were the staff doing the BBQ and hide his cameras because otherwise people would wonder why we were there.”

“So, when they announced it, it was such a relief. The day was amazing and we planned it like a proper wedding – she walked down an aisle, they had a ceremony, they had a band in the evening.

“There were still some Covid restrictions in place, so they had to dance outside and it started raining – they’re honestly some of the best wedding photos I’ve seen, as they danced with umbrellas.”

They said, ‘We’ve actually got engaged… and our wedding is tomorrow.'

However, the surprise wedding is far from the only out there request Georgina has received from couples during her time on the wedding circuit.

She reveals: “I personally like stuff that’s a bit different. I try to market myself to those kinds of couples who don’t want the hessian runner and jam jar style wedding, so I pride myself on being able to do those weddings.”

“I’ve got a couple coming up soon who have 180 guests in a big hall, and they’ve got a drag act at the reception and a big bouquet toss outside.

“Another couple wanted to get married outside in a wood – whether it was sunny or not. I was trying to make a plan b and they weren’t having it.

“It ended up raining and everybody got absolutely soaked, but it was one of the best weddings I’ve ever done because the fanciness of the wedding completely disappeared.”

I do have an understanding of the craziness that comes over you

And mum-of-one Georgina, who herself is set to tie the knot this year, wouldn’t have it any other way.

In fact, she says she totally understands when couples turn into the dreaded ‘bridezilla’ or ‘groomzilla’ and can spur into action when things go dramatically wrong.

She smiles: “It helps that I’m getting married this year so I do have an understanding of the craziness that comes over you and how much you care about the stupid little things.

“I’ve had cakes collapse and I did a wedding recently where half of the family left before the wedding breakfast after an argument, which was horrific, but that’s my job to sort.

“I am the cliche – I’ve always wanted to be a wedding planner and my favourite film was Father of the Bride – so this is what I’m destined to do.”
