Osman Yousefzada has been recasting his business in a more diverse and ethical light, working with sustainable materials, and with communities and craftspeople in countries including India, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan on his collection.
For fall, he created a film called “I’m Coming,” which was shot in Karachi, Pakistan; London, and the West Indies, touching on themes of unity and healing. His collection was a reflection of these cross-cultural viewpoints and included traditional motifs such as the all-seeing eye, Fatima’s hand and the pomegranate, a symbol of fertility and power.
The look: Dark, smouldering and sparkling.

Quote of note: “The way I want to do business is by giving back to communities, upgrading people’s skills and know-how. It’s an anti-colonialist approach; you’re not looking down at everybody else,” said the designer, who grew up in a tight-knit Muslim Pashtun community in inner city Birmingham, England.
Standout pieces: The coats of many colors, which were hand-woven in silk yarns by artisans in Uzbekistan using traditional techniques. Other coats adorned with mirror embroidery made in Rajasthan, India, and ones with colorful embroidered patches.
Takeaway: Yousefzada is on a mission to make lasting clothes that showcase artisanal skills that may be unknown, or under-appreciated, in the West.
