Aldi launches garlic pizza bread to rival popular takeaways for just 99p

Aldi is well known for creating products “inspired” by other brands, often revealing its latest beauty dupes and homeware products that offer cheap alternatives to branded favourites. However, for its latest copycat creation the supermarket has looked to one of the most popular takeaway chains to offer a budget alternative. Aldi has added a new garlic pizza bread side and even a box of fries to its Carlos Takeaway range.

The budget supermarket has added a Garlic Pizza Bread to its “takeaway” range, which is even served in a classic takeaway-style cardboard box.

The cheesy side has plenty of garlic seasoning and melted mozzarella to make it a convincing copy of some of the most popular takeaway chains’ sides.

In fact, one shopper has even declared it tastes “just like Domino’s” on a post in the Aldi Shoppers Facebook page.

The side costs just 99p, compared to Domino’s £4.99 garlic pizza bread which can currently be ordered for delivery only, due to the lockdown.

The side can be found in Aldi’s chilled cabinets in stores, and is sure to delight shoppers looking to recreate a takeaway at home if money is tight.

The store has also launched a box of thin and crispy fries for £1.49, which serves two people.

The new products join the range of stuffed crust pizzas that are sold in stores, so customers can make their own Italian “takeaway” at home.

Though takeaway restaurants are open during the coronavirus lockdown, many are offering delivery only and are not operating from all stores due to social distancing measures.

Many of the larger chains including McDonald’s and Nando’s have partnered with apps including Deliveroo and UberEats to ensure customers can still order for their nights in, as pubs and restaurants remain closed around the country.

However, Aldi isn’t the only supermarket chain creating “fakeaway” products to give shoppers their favourite takeouts for less.

Last week Morrisons launched its own box of takeaway meals to keep customers happy.

The £30 boxes contain eight meals each, making them much cheaper than ordering fresh food via an app.

There are two Market Kitchen boxes available, offering dishes including peri-peri chicken, chicken pad Thai and delicious curries too.

The bargain price includes delivery, making the meals work out as just £3.75 each – beating most local takeaways in price.

The two boxes are the latest to be added to Morrisons’ line of food delivery options, after it created boxes of essentials for shoppers who couldn’t make it to stores or get an online delivery slot for a grocery order.

Many other supermarkets are offering a similar service, but while the initial boxes were designed to contain food staples, brands are now adding more exciting options.

Marks and Spencer has also gone down the takeaway route with its own dine-in boxes that cost just £10, serving two people.

The three new boxes, dubbed the “Ultimate Night In”, are available for delivery so Britons can have a takeaway dinner on the cheap.

Shoppers can choose from Thai, Indian or Chinese cuisines for their meals, with classics including curries, noodles and rice dishes on offer.

Marks and Spencer said customers can expect delicious dinners such as  Chicken Panang Curry, Fragrant Beef Noodles, and a Green Thai Style Chicken Curry with Sticky Jasmine Rice.
