Chef shares simple recipe to make delicious liqueur from used coffee grounds

Although more famous for our passion for tea, the UK is a nation of coffee-lovers. It is estimated that we drink a staggering 98 million cups of the stuff every day.

Not only is the taste a key draw for many people, but it can help us wake up in the morning and keep energy levels sustained throughout the day. Some research has suggested that it also brings with it certain health benefits.

While it is popular to get your coffee when out and about, it is far more cost effective to make at home. And in doing so we are left with spent coffee grounds, which typically get thrown in the bin.

Rather than doing so, there is a tasty alternative. One chef shared a clever hack to ensure no part of the coffee bean goes to waste.

“Now, add your sugar, give it a good mix and leave overnight. It turns into this beautiful liquidy substance.”

The next step is where a key ingredient is added – the alcohol.

Tristan said: “Now add some hot water and the vodka. Pour it in, give it a good mix, then strain.”

“Bottle up, chill and serve over ice.”

He added: “This is ‘rubbish cooks’ and nothing gets wasted in my kitchen not even spent coffee grounds, or the opportunity to drink as much coffee liqueur as you possibly can.”

Replying to a follower in his comments, he shared the exact measurements used.

These were:

  • 200g spent coffee grounds
  • 200g sugar
  • 200ml boiling water
  • 300ml vodka.

Another asked how long they can leave the coffee grounds before they need to be used, to which Tristan said: “I’d freeze them until you are ready to make the recipe”.
