Chocolatier's crisp-stuffed chocolate bars could soon be stocked in Aldi

Hate choosing between sweet or savoury snacks?

Well, this woman’s ‘bar of crisps’ could be for you.

Maria Antoniou, a chocolatier from Chelmsford, has earned more than 700,000 views on TikTok for the unique product she says was born in lockdown.

Now, she’s in with a chance to stock her snack on supermarket shelves if she wins Channel 4 competition Aldi’s Next Big Thing, which is set to air on November 23 at 8pm.

The former personal assistant, who gave up her career to focus on her chocolate-making dream, said: ‘Bar of crisps was born in lockdown, when I used to sit on the sofa watching TV eating chocolate and crisps.

‘I just want to create products that you can’t get anywhere else, something different to what’s already on the shelves. When you tell people it’s cheese and onion with chocolate, they think you’re crazy. But it really works.

‘My friends and family think it’s hilarious that I make all these chocolate bars from a two-bedroom flat in Essex, but my dream is to have a unit or have the bar manufactured. To get the bar stocked in Aldi would be completely life-changing.’

Maria’s chocolate bars come stuffed with three flavours: Ready Salted, Salt and Vinegar and Cheese and Onion.

These are the flavours she’ll be pitching to the judging panel.

She’s set to compete against other intriguing product ideas in the treats category of the show, such as Yorkshire Pudding Beer and Scottish Empire biscuits with a twist.

Julie Ashfield, Managing Director of Buying at Aldi UK said: ‘I’m really looking forward to the treats category because it’s so broad and there are so many opportunities for creativity.

‘The challenge is how will the producers bring the wow factor that we’re looking for.’
