Sausage rolls come with endless variations, from the flavour of the sausage meat to the type of pastry that wraps around the filling. Onion, cheese and apple are just a few popular extras to try, though according to one TikTok user, honey and mustard sausage rolls are not to be missed. In a recent video on her profile, @haribeavis, also known as the “happy foodie”, shared her easy four-ingredient recipe that’s “perfect” for Christmas.

Making sausage rolls from scratch is a tradition for many Britons during the festive season, particularly on Christmas Eve. These flavoursome snacks are easy to make too, so you don’t have to worry about taking a trip to the shops for a long list of ingredients.

In fact, according to young food enthusiast and TikTok chef, Hari Beavis, you can make the perfect sausage rolls using a handful of affordable items.

She said: “We all know how incredible honey-mustard sausages are, so I made honey and mustard sausage rolls using just four ingredients.

“And let’s face it, anything wrapped in puff pastry is pretty incredible!”

Ingredients

  • One pack of shop-bought sausage meat (approximately 500g)
  • 500g of ready-to-roll puff pastry
  • One heaped tablespoon of wholegrain mustard
  • One tablespoon of runny honey

Hari explained that if you can’t find sausage meat, you can use ordinary sausages instead. You will need to remove the skin from each one in order to combine it with the flavouring.

Method

In a large glass bowl, add the meat, wholegrain mustard, and honey and mix together “really well” with a fork.

If you can’t use honey, the TikTok chef recommended using maple syrup instead, though is much more expensive.

Once combined, unroll your puff pastry sheet out onto a large non-stick baking tray, leaving the paper lining underneath.

Spoon the sausage meat filling evenly in a neat line along the width, and in the centre of the pastry base.

Fold the remaining pastry over to create a ruler-like shape and press the excess down with your fingertips to make sure it is tight.

Using a fork, “crimp” the small strip of pastry to create a neat pattern and seal the filling in place.

With a sharp knife, make a few slits on top of the filled section of the pastry to avoid the meat bursting out while cooking.

Using some leftover milk or a beaten egg, use a pastry brush to wash the pastry. This will create a glossy, golden finish once baked through.

At this point, you can add any extra toppings such as sesame seeds, poppy seeds, or salt and pepper. The TikTok chef recommended cooking the sausage roll for 30 minutes at 180C in a fan oven.

Once cooked, cut into small sausage rolls by making uniform slices along the length of the pastry before serving. These festive “treats” can be enjoyed hot or cold, though they are best straight from the oven.

Hari noted that the recipe is “perfect for Christmas Eve or Boxing Day” and also “adds a Christmas twist to an already delightful British classic”.

The recipe was a hit with the TikTok foodie’s followers, with many sharing their own personal favourite sausage roll flavours. One user recommended dipping the rolls in cranberry sauce, while another suggested adding onions to the sausage meat.
