Here's What Happened When 3 Editors Re-Created Their Favorite Coffee-Shop Drinks

There’s nothing like trying to foam milk at home to make you appreciate your friendly neighborhood barista. Coffee professionals make everything from latte art to perfectly smooth cold brew look oh-so easy.

Recreating coffee-shop-quality drinks at home isn’t always that simple, though. To see what really goes into a fancy drink, we challenged three POPSUGAR editors to try to make a homemade version of their treat-yourself coffee-shop fave. Keep reading to check out their results — and maybe get some inspiration for your next coffee craving.

“There’s two things I love in this world: a hot cup of coffee and a DIY opportunity. Now that I’m working from home, I take five minutes in the morning to make my favorite coffee-shop drink at home, a vanilla oat-milk latte. While brewing the Folgers® Noir True Dark Coffee, I heat up some full-fat oat milk over the stove, add a teaspoon of vanilla extract, and whisk using a handheld frother until it’s light and foamy. Then I pour the coffee into my favorite floral mug, add the milk, spoon the leftover froth on top, and finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon. The final result: a smooth, warm, indulgent drink, which is just what I need on a Monday morning.” — Rayna Rossitto, social media coordinator

“I’m OK admitting that I have a raging sweet tooth — from pastries to coffee drinks to cookies galore, I will always choose sweet over savory. However, I also have the tiny problem of being highly lactose intolerant, so I’ve had to find some more creative ways of satisfying those cravings. Say hello to my friend affogato: is it breakfast? Is it dessert? I don’t know, but it’s delicious. I use a soy-based vanilla ice cream and a dark-roast coffee like Folgers® Black Silk, plus a little sprinkle of cinnamon on top. When I make it at home, it’s definitely not as precise as in a restaurant, and my ice cream melts almost immediately, but TBH, who cares! It’s creamy and rich and I couldn’t ask for anything more.” — Aviel Kanter, associate director

“Confession: I’m the type of person who would rather forgo something than make it myself. So when I couldn’t visit my usual coffee shop near the office to purchase my morning cup thanks to shelter-in-place orders, I just decided to do without. Who me? Make my own coffee? I’d rather be irritable and hangry — or so I thought. This went on for months until my stubbornness finally began to wane and I warmed up to the idea of making my own morning drink at home. First up was learning how to execute a flawless pour-over. Luckily, Folgers® Coffee makes it easy with their ground coffee (no bean grinding necessary!). It took a week of close supervision from my boyfriend (a coffee snob), but I finally got the hang of it and have been making myself an iced churro latte most days with Folgers® Colombian Coffee, a dash of ground cinnamon, and some condensed milk — bonus points for pouring the condensed milk in a pattern down the inside of the cup!” — Stephanie Nguyen, senior editor
