There are many different ways to make hot chocolate, the method you use depends on your personal preference. No matter your taste you will love these hot chocolate recipes, courtesy of BBC Good Food.

How to make hot chocolate

Triple chocolate hot chocolate

This recipe takes five minutes to prepare and five to cook, and of course it uses three types of chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 50ml double cream
  • 150ml whole milk
  • 50g chopped milk chocolate
  • 25g chopped dark chocolate
  • few mini white chocolate buttons

Method

Step one 

Whip the double cream until it holds its shape then set aside until needed.

Step two

Put the milk in a small saucepan and heat gently until simmering.

Add the milk chocolate and dark chocolate, then stir until melted

Pour into a mug and top with a dollop of the double cream and scatter over a few mini white chocolate buttons to decorate.

Hot chocolate with marshmallows

This recipe is even quicker to make, and makes about four to six mugs worth of hot chocolate.

Ingredients

  • 600ml milk
  • 142ml pot double cream
  • 100g chopped chocolate

Method

Step one

Pour the milk, double cream and chopped chocolate into a pan.

Step two

Bring gently to the boil, whisking until smooth.

Serve in individual cups or mugs topped with mini marshmallows and a little grated chocolate.

Slow-cooked hot chocolate

If you’ve got a time on your hands, this delicious hot chocolate takes up to three and a half hours to cook.

If you’re planning on getting through about 10 cups of this delectable drink, this recipe is for you.

Ingredients

  • 1l milk
  • 300ml double cream
  • 200g dark chocolate, chopped
  • 100g milk chocolate, chopped
  • scorched marshmallows, to serve
  • softly whipped cream, to serve
  • grated chocolate, to serve

Method

Step one

Pour the milk and double cream into the slow cooker.

Add the dark chocolate and milk chocolate, then cover and cook on low for 2 hrs, stirring halfway through cooking.

Step two

Remove the lid and stir again, then continue to cook for a further 15-20 mins.

Ladle into mugs and top with the marshmallows, dollops of cream and grated chocolate.

Hazelnut hot chocolate

Nutella fans will love this nutty twist on a traditional hot chocolate.

The recipe only serves one, so double up where needed!

Ingredients

  • 50ml double cream
  • 1 tsp chocolate hazelnut spread (we used Nutella)
  • 150ml whole milk
  • 25g milk chocolate , chopped
  • 25ml hazelnut liqueur (we used Frangelico)
  • 1 tsp chopped hazelnuts , toasted

Method

Step one

Whip the cream until thick and billowy then fold in the chocolate hazelnut spread.

Only stir once or twice, you want a marbled effect.

Step two

In a small saucepan over a medium heat warm the milk until simmering.

Take off the heat then add the chocolate. Let it melt, stirring frequently until smooth.

Return to the heat until warm then add the hazelnut liqueur.

Step three

Pour the hot chocolate into a mug and add the whipped cream mixture.

Sprinkle the top with the toasted hazelnuts and enjoy.
