He said: “Our mission to create smiles and bring joy has never been more important.

“We know we aren’t saving lives, but we hope to do something as small and simple as making someone smile. It’s our way of saying thank you to people far and wide who are working so hard to keep our nation moving, safe and well at the moment.”

Krispy Kreme also plans to recruit volunteers from its active head office and operations staff, who will be delivering surprise doughnuts to the heroes in their local communities.

They are also inviting the general public to support the mission from their home by ‘dough it forward’ asking people to nominate local heroes in their neighbourhoods to receive a thank you in doughnut form.

This news comes after KFC announced that they would also be opening 11 of its stores to serve as a delivery service for people in the nearby areas.

The chicken shop is hoping to expand this to other branches if it is deemed to do so.

KFC will all have a reduced menu which will prevent the need for team members to cross stations and keep work simple.

Team members are also packing the orders wearing gloves.

The takeaway restaurant has also said thousands of free meals are being donated to NHS and key workers across the country.

Pret A Manger has also said today that they will reopen ten stores close to London hospitals so that they can deliver free food to the country’s critical workers.

They are running a takeaway service only and are open from 8am-2pm daily.
