McDonald’s has added a brand new plant-based burger to its menu which has been certified by the Vegetarian Society and uses a vegan bun, pea protein-based vegan cheese and sauce. The fast-food giant has been working for three years on the McPlant burger with plant-based firm Beyond Meat.

However, the new menu item is currently only available in select restaurants during an initial trial.

Michelle Graham-Clare, chief marketing officer for McDonald’s UK and Ireland said: “We’re so pleased to be finally launching McPlant in the UK and Ireland. As with every McDonald’s offering, we take our time to ensure it meets the highest standards and is something that all our customers will enjoy.

“We are always looking for different ways to innovate and meet our customers’ needs, and with McPlant we have a delicious plant-based burger that will appeal to everyone.

“Whether you’re vegan or just fancy a plant-based patty, we’re confident you will enjoy the McPlant.”

What is in the new McDonald’s McPlant burger?

The McDonald’s McPlant burger is the first plant-based burger that aims to emulate the fast-food restaurant’s meat burgers.

The burger is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.

The patty is made from Beyond Meat offering “the same great taste and experience as you would expect from a McDonald’s burger” but all completely vegan.

McDonald’s has worked on creating a special pea protein cheese which is said to “taste just like McDonald’s cheese slices”.

The burger also features a brand new vegan sauce made especially for the McPlant burger.

McDonald’s is also using a vegan sesame bun, mustard, ketchup, fresh onion, pickles, lettuce and tomato.

The burger contains 429 calories.
