Traditional cheese, still a great favourite, came second in the poll. Egg mayonnaise was third.
It’s not known how long our favourite filling has been around, but the earliest literary reference to a “bacon sandwich” was made by Animal Farm author George Orwell in 1931.

As a nation we eat 12 billion sarnies year at a cost of £8 billion-plus. On average we eat four a week. A fifth of workers have one every day for lunch. A quarter of those are home-made.
But despite being sarnie experts, 46 percent of us do not realise the dish was invented in Britain.

Spokeswoman Shakila Ahmed said: “We thought it would be fitting to celebrate the town’s most famous resident.”
