Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez made headlines (on headlines, on headlines) when the power couple did a “10-day challenge” back in January. People were obsessed—and not just because J.Lo’s abs somehow looked even more toned than usual.
The point of the challenge? To cut out all carbs and sugars in an effort to “reset” their bodies (J.Lo’s words!).
J.Lo said at one point that the whole thing was an idea that came from her trainer, who told her the challenge would be a good way to reset her body.
And now, AOL.com reports that the whole challenge may have actually been inspired by a 2014 bestselling book, The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet: Activate Your Body’s Natural Ability to Burn Fat and Lose Weight Fast, by Mark Hyman, MD, the medical director at Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Functional Medicine.
The plan the famously fit couple followed does sound similar to The Blood Sugar Solution 10-Day Detox Diet.
Essentially, the 10-day diet encourages people to cut out sugars and carbs in order to “help you break addictions to sugar and processed foods—while feeling healthier and losing weight,” according to Dr. Hyman’s website.
Tbh, cutting out carbs and sugar isn’t easy—J.Lo and A-Rod repeatedly talked about how much effort and thought it took (and how much they missed carbs).
“So it turns out, when you don’t have sugar and you don’t have carbs, you’re really really hungry all the time,” J.Lo said in an Instagram Story on day two of her challenge. A-Rod also said he was “dying” on the challenge to his Instagram fans.
Clearly, J.Lo and A-Rod both survived (and even got Today cohost Hoda Kotb to try the diet for herself). Jennifer even said she might even do it again. Still, she told the Today show that it’s definitely not sustainable. “This is not something you do all the time. It’s a challenge to really reset your body,” she said. “It’s something to clear yourself out.”
