Clodagh McKenna reveals tip for getting rid of slugs
Slugs and snails can cause widespread devastation in gardens, eating everything from a plant’s leaves to their flowers and stems.
The pesky pests are most active at night but will usually leave telltale silvery trails on patios, walls and floors.
To stop slugs and snails from eating plants, Sophie Thorogood, from the technical team at global pest control manufacturer, Pelsis Group, has shared an “easy way” to deter the pests.
Sophie suggested using copper tape on plant pots to deter slugs and snails from eating plants.
She said: “To protect your plants, the addition of copper tape to the top of plants pots is an easy way to deter slugs and snails.

“This will last a while due to the robustness of the material.”
The reason copper tape deters slugs and snails is because it causes a harmless electric shock when they touch it.
The copper interferes with slugs and snails’ slime which is why they avoid it. Sophie also suggested physically moving slugs and snails away from plants.
She said: “If you have the time, it is worthwhile physically removing the slugs each evening and placing them far away from the plants you are trying to protect.

“This can be quite labour intensive but this will reduce the numbers night after night.
“Having a garden with biodiversity can also deter slugs, as hedgehogs, toads, frogs and ground beetles are natural enemies of the slug.”
Carlos Garcia, son of the founders of Total Clean, also suggested using copper tape but he also suggested using beer traps.
He said: “Copper tape around garden beds is a great way to deter slugs and snails, with beer traps and diatomaceous earth the runners-up as these are also effective methods.
“Planting slug-resistant plants and avoiding over-watering can help reduce their numbers as well.”
Slugs dislike plants with a strong fragrance such as lavender, fennel, rosemary and wormwood.
