Four lawn care ‘mistakes’ to avoid causing ‘yellow and brown’ patches of grass

This Morning: 'UK’s best lawn-fluencer' shares his best mowing tips

Lawn care is important throughout the year, including during the winter months when the grass lies dormant, and performing certain jobs can help to keep the lawn lush and prevent patches appearing.

Jack Sutcliffe, founder of Power Sheds, has shared four common lawn “mistakes” to avoid making when caring for the lawn.

1. Cutting the lawn too short

Gardeners should adjust their mowing height depending on the time of the year, the state of the lawn as well as the weather conditions.

It is important not to cut the lawn too short at all times of the year and if it is cut too short in summer, this can lead to scalping the lawn and other problems.

The gardening pro said: “Be careful not to trim your grass too short to keep your lawn and garden looking healthy throughout winter and summer.

“Grass growth slows during colder months, so it’s recommended you adjust your mower’s blades accordingly for proper grass care.

“While you don’t need to mow your lawn as regularly, you should continue to do so every three to five weeks.”

In the summer months, mow your lawn once a week if needed, or every fortnight, making sure it is dry before cutting.

2. Using the wrong amount of feed

The lawn should be fed at different times of the year, and a specific amount should be used, depending on the brand, so make sure to check the instructions.

When fertilising, it is important not to feed the grass too much or it can cause damage, resulting in “yellow and brown” patches.

In some cases, when doing it at the wrong time of year, can cause areas of the lawn to die completely.

3. Not watering the lawn

Britons should water their lawns if it hasn’t rained in a while to prevent it from drying out, helping to keep it nice and green.

The best method is to water using a sprinkler but if you are in a hosepipe ban area, using a watering can with a rainfall spout can help.

This process shouldn’t stop during the winter months either, according to the expert.  The expert added: “There’s a common misunderstanding that homeowners don’t need to water their plants during the winter due to shedding leaves or rainfall.

“This isn’t the case, your lawn, plants and shrubs still need water, or they will become dehydrated. Continue watering your lawn throughout winter to keep it healthy throughout the harsh weather.”

4. Cutting the lawn at the wrong time of day

During the summer months, it is best to avoid mowing the lawn during the day, when the sun is at its highest and hottest point.

This can put the grass under lots of pressure which it may not be able to cope with so make sure to mow during the morning or evening.
