Despite their bad reputation amongst gardeners, many weeds can actually be incredibly beneficial for the garden, playing a huge role in helping it flourish.
They can help to attract wildlife, support the ecosystem and also nourish the soil, according to a gardening expert.
Chris Bonnett, the founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, said: “Gardeners who utilise the hidden talents of weeds can significantly improve their outdoor spaces.
“Instead of getting consumed with tearing weeds out of your lawn, leave them alone and let nature reclaim its place in your garden.
“Embracing weeds can help support biodiversity, enhance the soil and conserve water. Just keep in mind that weeds can quickly overgrow, so it’s important to not let them take over the garden.
“It’s better to allocate a certain area for them so they’re not competing with your plants for nutrients, water and sunlight.”
1. Attract insects
According to the expert, weeds can attract a variety of insects, birds and other wildlife into the garden, which can contribute to a balanced environment where pollinators thrive.
Pollinators are “vital” to the production of healthy plants and crops so let the weeds grow in the garden.
2. Soil improver
The expert added: “Improve the soil by applying decomposed weeds to it. You can let the weeds rot down in a bucket of water and then pour the contents onto your compost bin.

3. Mulch
As well as this, weeds can help to reduce water evaporation by covering the soil surface, which is massively beneficial in the summer months.

4. Prevent soil erosion
Although they can look unsightly, they can also help to prevent soil erosion from wind or water by covering bare patches of the lawn.
This is because their strong root systems hold the soil in place and prevent valuable topsoil from being washed away.
If gardeners do want to get rid of any weeds, it is best to try natural methods such as pulling them up before going in with any chemicals.
