Every gardener will run into the most common garden pest at some point – the slug. Slugs tend to target plants that are lush and foliage-rich, and vegetables. Some of the plants that are most commonly eaten by slugs are hostas, dahlias and peas.
In areas where slugs make a regular appearance, it can be difficult for plants to grow.
There are a multitude of methods gardeners use to deter slugs from eating plants.
From natural methods to pesticides to slug-proof plants, there are plenty of ways you can deter the pests from eating your favourite plants.
Some of the slug-proof plants that Gardeners’ World.com recommend are rodgersia and brunnera.
You can also spray a garlic solution on your plants to deter slugs.
But if you don’t fancy investing in new plants or using garlic spray then you can try copper tape.
Gardeners’ World recommend fixing copper tape to your pots and containers.
The site said: “Copper tape is thin, easy to cut and simple to apply.”

Overtime, the copper tape will turn green, giving it a more attractive appearance.
To apply the copper tape, you will just need some pinking shears or normal scissors and the tape itself.
The first thing you need to do is cut a piece of tape to the size of your pot or container.
If you use pinking shears, they will leave a zig-zag design on the top of your pot.

Next, you need to stick the tape down to the top of your pot, just below the rim.
To make sure there aren’t any creases, you need to remove the backing tape bit by bit.
For plants growing in the garden, you can buy copper rings that you can place around the plants.
You can also place the copper rings around emerging seedlings to stop the slugs eating new plants.
Slugs don’t like to touch copper due to a chemical reaction that happens on their skin.
When they touch copper, it feels uncomfortable for them.
They will therefore avoid moving over it.
Another physical barrier you can try in your pots is using eggshells.
Putting them on the soil around your plants will hopefully deter them from moving towards your plant.
