Homebase reveals their top garden tasks for July
The summer months are often when Britons’ gardens thrive with lots of brightly-coloured flowers, long grasses and crops.
However, warmer temperatures and droughts mean many plants native to the UK dry out and die during hot weather.
With climate change now pushing up temperatures every year, gardeners need to be wise about what they’re planting.
Shrubs and Mediterranean plants are a great option but they don’t always have the vibrancy and colour of flowers.
With this in mind, Allan Jeffrey, Ultra Decking’s managing director has shared which flowers to plant that have a “long lifespan” and “last in the heat”.

He exclusively told Express.co.uk: “If you are more experienced in gardening and looking to change up the aesthetic of your outdoor space adding some fresh colours, coneflowers, peonies and dahlias are great options that have a long lifespan all season long and will last in the heat.
“If you are aiming to achieve a more tropical aesthetic in your garden and want to ensure your plants last all summer long in the heat, hardy palms, tree ferns, strelizia and fatsias are plants that will create a tropical theme within your garden and can have you feeling like you are sunbathing in the Bahamas while relaxing at home.”
Coneflowers
Also known as echinacea, coneflowers are easy to grow with beautiful white, pink, red or orange blooms that look like large daisies.
Coneflowers love full sun and soil that drains easily. They will tolerate dry soil but dislike overly wet earth.

These work particularly well in prairie-style gardens and beds and borders. They’re also loved by pollinators like bees and butterflies.
Peonies
Peonies grow slowly but will reward gardeners with white, cream, pink, yellow or red flowers. They also have a beautiful scent.
There are three main types of peonies – tree peonies, intersectional peonies and herbaceous peonies.
Dahlias
Dahlias are popular plants that come in a range of colours, sizes and shapes.
Dahlias love a sunny border and will even flower into late autumn. While they are easy to grow, they are not hardy so they need protection during the winter months.
To boost flowering, dahlias need to be deadheaded. They also like fertile, well-draining soil.
