Slugs love eating our favourite plant displays, especially hostas, dahlias, tulips and delphiniums. Not only do the pests eat the plant’s leaves, but they also eat the stems and flowers which means flower displays can end up being decimated.
Slugs are around throughout the year but are most active at night which is when they will likely attack your favourite plants.
If there are unusual holes in your plants and silvery slime trails in your garden, you likely have a slug problem.
With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation and influencer Mrs Hinch have shared how to deter slugs from gardens using a homemade hack.
Facebook user Deborah Finlay asked Mrs Hinch users on the social media platform how to stop slugs eating her plants. She said she has tried using egg shells but they didn’t work.

The post was inundated with responses with one of the most popular responses being to use garlic spray.
Balvinder Lally said: “Garlic spray works great on my hostas. Fresh garlic boiled in water, cooled and then sieved into a water bottle. Spray directly onto hostas and repeat if it rains.”
Balvinder said gardeners should boil the garlic for around 10 minutes and wait for it to cool before sieving it into a spray bottle.
She said the hack “worked really well”, “lasts ages” and is “well worth a go”.
Susan Walker commented: “Garlic drench to deter slugs. Two garlic bulbs boiled in two pints of water and strained.

“Dilute one tablespoon in four litres of water and pour over young plants once a week in the evening.”
Anoushka Curtis-Vincent posted: “Another vote for garlic water. Google the recipe. Works a treat on my hostas.”
Garlic can be bought online or from most supermarkets.
Asda Fragrant and Bold Garlic costs 50p for three bulbs which works out at just under 17p per bulb. Tesco Garlic costs 55p for a large bulb.
Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans included using vaseline, WD40, copper wire or beer.
Nuala Brady said: “Rub vaseline or spray WD40 around the pot. It makes it slippery and the slugs can’t get past it.”
Sharon Falaize replied: “You need copper wire around the pot.”
Colin Nettle suggested: “Put beer in a plastic container i.e. butter container. Sink it into the earth where the slugs are.
“It always works for me. In the morning it’s quite often full up with slugs.”
