Gardening expert gives tips on deterring pets and pests
Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.co.uk, said: “We put a lot of time and effort into caring for our gardens and growing our plants and unfortunately foxes can ruin these in an instant.
“They often dig holes or leave droppings in the garden making it messy overall.
“Foxes are active all throughout the year and those that were born in spring will now be finding their own territory so they’ll certainly be roaming about.
“There are some simple measures you can do that will keep foxes out of the garden without causing them harm.
“Blocking exists and entrances and using natural ingredients to deter them like white vinegar are just a few ways to keep these animals out.”

1. Keep the garden lit
Foxes prefer to roam around in the dark and won’t enter anywhere that is bright, so consider investing in some garden lights.
These could be solar lights or even a motion sensor light to save money on bills. According to the expert, this will “immediately deter” foxes from the garden.
2. Scents
Chris said: “Foxes have a good sense of smell, so it’s worth using this against them to save your garden. They tend to dislike the smell of vinegar so it’s worth pouring vinegar in small plates and spreading them around your garden.”
Vinegar will also help to deter foxes and can be picked up for as little as 30p from stores such as Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

3. Block entrances
Foxes are likely to enter gardens over the fence so the way to keep them out along with other animals is to put spikes on your fences.
This won’t harm animals but will be uncomfortable for them, preventing them from being able to enter the garden.
4. Lay down pickle strips
The expert continued: “Prickle strips are to be embedded into the soil and the aim is that it simply makes the grass a little uncomfortable to walk on for animals.
“You could put this underneath the soil that is near your plants but be sure to wear shoes whenever you go near it. They will also stop foxes from trying to dig up holes in your garden.”
5. Automatic water system
This method will startle the fox and other animals causing them to leave the garden straight away.
Chris said it’s essentially an automatic sprinkler that will spray water when a fox is near after the sensors pick up motion.
This won’t harm the fox, but it will be enough for them to want to make a quick escape from your garden, leaving plants and crops safe.
