Gardening expert Monty Don has shared how to sow parsley seeds in old compost. Monty planted parsley in a container that used to have carrots in it. He explained on BBC Gardeners’ World: “Last year, this container had carrots in it and I’ve kept the old compost and I’m going to sow directly into it some parsley, which is also a member of the carrot family.

“Normally, it’s not a good idea to reuse old compost and I would say you should always refresh it but these are not normal times.

“So if you can’t get compost, and some people have been having some problems with that, reuse old compost, use soil, use whatever you can get.

“In the end, it’s better to use something than nothing.”

Monty said the most important thing to have in a container is holes at the bottom for drainage.

Plants need to be able to drain any excess water to make sure they aren’t saturated.

He said: “Remember, if you’re planting in any kind of container make sure that there are holes in the bottom for drainage.”

Monty showed viewers his own parsley seedlings which he planted in a tray.

He explained that once they’ve grown a bit bigger, they will be planted in their own pots.

He continued: “Normally, I don’t actually directly sow parsley into the ground.

“I’ve got a tray of seedlings here. These are flat leaf parsley. Hundreds of plants.

“These will all be picked out into individual pots grown on and then planted out in about four weeks’ time.”

Growing parsley, which can be used in all kinds of recipes, doesn’t need to be complicated.

Monty said you can simply sprinkle seeds into containers with compost in.

“I want to grow more parsley because it’s a fantastic herb,” he said.

He said: “It’s good for you, it tastes marvellous but you do need to keep sowing new parsley to get a good, decent supply.

“Just a few seeds and that’s all you need.

“Sprinkle them lightly over the compost.

“Lightly work your hands over it to cover them up and then water it and that’s all you have to do until the seedlings start to appear.

“Don’t let those seeds dry out and they should germinate in about 10 days’ time.”

The new series of Gardeners’ World airs tonight at 9pm on BBC Two.
