Houseplants are a great way to bring the outside indoors, especially during the winter months. Snake plants, which are a common indoor plant in the UK, are also known for their ability to remove toxic air pollutants, according to Heathline. However, experts warn that they need extra care during the colder months of the year.
Snake plants are incredibly easy to look after, requiring little attention to grow.
However, like with many other houseplants, the colder weather means they need more care to ensure they are staying healthy.
Experts at The Greenhouse People have shared top tips on looking after a snake plant during the winter months.
They said: “As winter draws nearer the greenery outside begins to disappear, you may want to bring some of the greenery indoors.
“Houseplants are an ideal way to bring your space to life.
“Snake plants, or as they’re more commonly known, mother-in-law’s tongue, are a popular choice for many homes thanks to their hardy and easy to care for nature.
“But just because snake plants can survive long periods of neglect, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take some extra precautions during winter.
“These plants thrive in the bright light so keep them next to a south-facing window to take advantage of those precious daylight hours.”

When it comes to watering, the experts explained that they do not require a lot.
They added: “You will only need to water them every 10 to 14 days, this isn’t a set rule though, so take care to regularly test how dry the soil is using a skewer.”
Snake plants should only be watered if the soil has completely dried out.
The Greenhouse People continued: “Use room temperature water and ensure that the soil is moist but not submerged in water.
“Make sure you’re only watering the soil, not the leaves.
“Water trapped in the folds of the leaves can also lead to rotting.
“You also want to avoid fertilising during the winter.
“Snake plants only require fertiliser in the spring and summer, using fertiliser at the wrong time could lead to stunted growth or root rot.”
Another popular houseplant that is easy to care for is the Swiss cheese plant.
The Greenhouse People explained: “Cheese plants, otherwise known as Monstera, have become an increasingly popular houseplant.
“These plants are extremely sensitive to overwatering so be sure to avoid giving them too much water during winter.”
Owners of a Swiss cheese plant should be watering them every two to four weeks.
The experts recommend using a skewer to test how dry the soil is.
They added: “If it is too wet, hold off on watering.
“You will want to ensure that the top five centimetres are dry before watering again.
“It is also important to ensure that the pot has adequate drainage, and the roots are not submerged in water.”
