Gardening tips: Four homemade hacks to kill garden weeds
Winter brings extremely cold temperatures which may cause plants to die as well as garden furniture cracking, leading to hefty costs.
From bed sheets to garlic spray, gardening expert Jack Sutcliffe, founder of Power Sheds, has shared how to protect the garden.
1. Cover ground plants in bed sheets
Placing a lightweight bed sheet over ground plants can help to prevent any gaps of cold air from seeping into the leaves and flowers.
Remember to remove the cover during the day to let the plants get the nutrients from the sun.
If it is especially windy, it may also be worth securing the sheet with some plant pots or pegs.

2. Spray garlic around plants
The expert explained: “Winter is the perfect time for pests, such as ants and slugs, to invade garden plants and destroy opportunities for growth when spring comes.
“The pungent smell of garlic will repel any pesky pests without damaging the plants.”
Jack recommended blending garlic with a little water to create a spray which is easy to spread around the garden.
3. Rub olive oil on garden furniture
Rubbing oil on any rattan, wicker or wooden garden furniture can act as a layer of protection during the cold months to keep it looking its best.

To ensure it is providing enough protection from frost and snow, apply it regularly throughout the winter.
4. Bubble wrap plant pots
The shed expert continued: “Trap warm air around your potted plants by wrapping the pots in bubble wrap.
“Cold weather, particularly frost, causes the water in plant cells to freeze, but bubble wrap can help them to survive windy winter weather.”
This is especially important for any terracotta plant pots which are particularly susceptible to damage.

5. Insulate your shed
Britons should line the floor and walls of their sheds with old rugs and offcuts of carpet to help insulate and protect the shed from any potential mould or damp.
The expert added: “The cold, wet weather that comes in winter can be damaging for our gardens, so it’s important people take time to prepare and protect their garden in harsher conditions.
“Our practical tips will help to keep your garden in the best possible condition throughout winter, saving you money on maintenance and repair costs.”
